He was the greatest of role models when that meant something. He enlisted on the day after Pearl Harbor, served for 3 1/2 years. He was instrumental in helping break the color barrier in baseball. And just a fine man. I met him when I was a kid, lucky me. There was so much to admire about him and how he conducted himself.

Sports fans: there was no Cy Young Award back then, otherwise he would have won 6, and maybe as many as 8 of them. And he missed out on 4 years in his peak years.

If you get a chance, stop by the Bob Feller museum sometime. It's just west of Des Moines right off I-80. Bob's story is pretty interesting.
