How was it done?

I've seen pics with guys putting the engine on the k-frame and putting it all in at once with manifolds and all.  Was this done with all cars?  While I haven't taken measurement, I can't see how my 440 will go in from the bottom in my 71.

That is exactly how the factory did it.

Nope, manifolds on.  I believe there is a photo on this site somewhere (it's also in one of the Mopar Performance catalogs) of new Chargers on the line getting dropped down onto their engines.

I just don't see how it would fit with a 440 and hp manifolds. I had a helluva time getting the manifolds on, I scratched the inner fenders all up. I guess without the steering column in it would give you more room?

had  hp manifolds  on & off mine lot of times  over the years !!   for  some reason the column is in the way  of removing the last tube nut !!  
so have to pull the column , no biggie , but last time i swapped heads , was meaning  to shorten the tube nut & use a spacer  , but forgot all about it  , not sure if its the repop manifolds causing this problem ,
