I was kicking this idea around, just to make the tach move visible.  I am not sure I want to go all white.  The black are definitely very dim, I will need to add led's to brighten them up for sure.  I think it may look better installed, but black might just look better and obviously more like the original.

I think it would look best if the speedo matched. I think that would actually look pretty cool the more I think about it. You know, the center of the speedo black just like the tach.

skip68

I agree.   It would look pretty cool with the centers black.   Go for it Len....

I like the look of it but I really don't like it over the original look.  It wouldn't stop me from buying a car that had it done but I know I'd quickly convert it back to stock. :Twocents:

I like that idea.  :2thumbs: I'm not a big fan of the white gauges, but the black and white together looks alright.

For me it's all about the contrast between the two gauges. From my POV the white tach has the opposite effect that you are looking for. Rather than highlight the tach in the back it makes it harder for my eyes to quickly focus on it when they dart back and forth from the road to the tach. (The white background tends to highlight the clock in the middle more than the tach.) Plus the red needle gets lost in the bright white background, again less contrast.

YMMV.  :2thumbs:

 I am guessing you recognize the bezel and bubble wrap in my pic. Do you have a pic of your dash with the cluster installed?

Interesting points so far, thanks.  It does look more balanced in pic below with added speedo w/white.  But it would be hard to get that on my actual gauge.  I added the clock ring/ticks because it was too blank just black.

Just cut the small gages in half -white on top black on bottom !! :2thumbs:

Looks interesting. I do think they all need to match in some way, shape, or form.

I had mine done in silver with black lettering. I'll try and dig up a pic.

I am thinking it is too much contrast.  Moparstuart's looks sharp too, but I may just go with stock.  I have the white tach and the rest are still original, I am not sure when I will get to going thru the cluster, they are pretty clean, but the 40 yr old faces are def not a nice white.  Since, there is no rust on them, anyone find something to clean the faces up or is it just faded/dingy paint that can't be cured, other than reprints or labels?

I though that too.

What if the black, was dark gray?

Also, in a way, it does need to match with the small gauges, just my 2 cents.

Another thought, put red where the white it?

Not bad, but I agree with a few others, they really all need to match (atleast in design) to look good as an overall unit.  I think you could come up with a pretty slick white/blacke design, but it would be an expense of having it set-up and cut etc.

One option is to go with the stock/resto cluster for now and as time allows build one to suit.  You can swap them out fairly easily and it really changes the look and feel of the interior.

Your main reason though is very valid.  Although they illuminate well, the visibility is just not that great.  Leaning in to see where the needle is at isn't the best way to analyze your mph.  LEDs will help...moparstuart has a shot with some behind a cluster in one of the "cluster mod" threads.

Ryan - Is that the pic with silver?  It looks white or really, really light silver??  If so who did them for you?  They do look to have less contrast then the white.

TexasStroker - I agree, I may go stock and change them later.  The main reason I posted this up, was I sent the gauge in for clock repair and was debating on having it changed back to black or the combo while there.  My other concern is, if I redo the other gauges in black later, with decals, will the tach/clock then look too different being printed on the bezel and probably not the same exact style as decals?  I did see moparstuart's other cluster with LEDs.  It was definitely brighter, but definitely brings out the blue in little lense/light cover. I will probably go the LED route, if I go with black lenses.  I am pretty sure that I am not doing a combo, but still split on black or white.
