Any chance of salvaging a block after throwing a rod?

Ok, I suspect that I already know the answer but ill ask anyhow. I don't have any pics as of yet so lets go with a short description.

Looking at an all original 68 rt that threw a rod. Seller says it broke out the bottom of the block and through the pan. Thinks its the #8 cylinder that went. Is there any point or way to save the block? It's the numbers engine and hence why I am asking the question.

Thanks

Depends on what it did to the block itself, most likely its trashed but take it apart and have a look.

Blocks can be welded, but it needs to be taken to an experienced Cast iron Welder...

Here is a pic sent to me. I'm in the process of asking for more info on it. Engine bay is SUPER dirty...

Awe Hell, I'd have that one welded if it ain't no bigger than that....I was thinkin' like the entire side of the block was thrashed...

What's the likelihood that there is unrepairable damage to the interior of the block?

Is this kind of repair likely to last or would it just be throwing good money after bad?

At this point it's not entirely clear that there isn't more damage than this.

Regardless, I will need to have someone go look at the car for me since it's several states away, just trying to get a feel for if I should even bother.

Can he drop the pan and photo for you? It's just a guess otherwise. There can be a lot of ugliness even without a hole in the block!

Apparently the hole on the other side of the block is the same size as the pictured one.

Here is a pic that just showed up..   [edit] whoops.. This is the same hole as above, just different angle.

My gut reaction is that it isn't so bad, but obviously there could be huge damage inside, particularly to oil galleries and the lifter bores. How good is the price? Is it a stick or automatic?  :D I have a '68 440/hemi case with matching numbers. Do the engine numbers match the VIN or fender tag?

Agreed, at this point I'd be more concerned about what it's like inside the block than that particular bit of damage.

Anything can be fixed, unfortunately, you are correct in the assumption as to whether it is worth it, or not ?
That,
will never be determined from exterior photos !
Only a complete teardown & Internal Inspection can fully assess the amount of damage, and repairs neccessary.

Some Trivia,
As an example of "what" can be fixed,
We once were tasked with the repair of a numbers matching HEMI Block, that had been used as a Nitro Mill back in the Day and had incurred a Clutch explosion !
At that time, being the numbers matching Block found for the original Body HEMI Cuda, cost was not a factor ?
Long story short,
we ended up cutting the bell housing portion off a junk 440 Block, and re-welding it to the damaged HEMI Block, even laterally at an angle across #5 main !
We were lucky in that the water jacket case had NOT been compromised, nonetheless, it took 3 tries on the Dyno to get the rear main seal aligned sufficiently so it didn't leak !
We limited the Dyno session to 5500 rpm, and 490hp, but it held and ran well, still does to this Day, as I have even seen the car at a few shows over the decades, as "Numbers matching" !
The Car has since changed hands numerous times, and I've never approached any new owners to "spill the Beans" about their Engine Block ?
We "hid" the welding on the Block externally by grinding and filling with epoxy, then matting the surface finish by pressing 80 grit sandpaper into the curing epoxy to match the cast iron surface texture. "

NEVER AGAIN, still lost my arese timewise on that one !
Only wimps wear Bowties !

It was an RT 727 console auto car. Nothing passed along about how it was detonated.

He had it listed on craigslist in portland for $15k.  Posting is already deleted.
