Insuring my Charger

Yes, I've used the search feature and found quite a few threads on the subject, which pretty much tells me my answer. But, I have to make sure!

If I am 20 and want to drive my Charger as much as possible, is there any collector car insurance company that will give me an agreed value policy? It seems like everyone wants 10 years driving experience and two or three thousand miles a year of driving max.  :rotz:

As far as I have found, there is not. Sadly, it looks like I'll have to insure it as a regular old car and take the risk. Unless anyone knows otherwise?  :shruggy:

Unfortunately, i am in the same boat as you are my friend.  I'm 21 and like you stated collector insurances have either an experience, mileage, or location limit. Correct me if i'm wrong but, I think Haggerdy doesn't have a mileage limit but you have to have the vehicle stored in a shed or garage when not in use. I'm unsure if they have an experience limit or not.  I guess when I put mine on the road i'll just use my normal insurance (progressive).

I have Hagarty and unless I am with the vehicles or stored in a locked facility they are not covered. They never asked me about any milage. Also cheaper isn't better, I try to get max coverage because you never know when you might get hurt or hit something worth big $$$

The idea behind collector car insurance is that the car will not be used as a driver. This way Willie White Trash won't be bouncing off Mercedes in his 74 Pinto on his way to the flea market every day and driving up the rates for the people who drive their Hemi Chargers 1,500 miles a year.

If you're going to use it as a daily driver you need to have insurance that caters to that need.

I'm going through this now too. The bottom line is, I have to build a proper lockable garage on my property to get insurance beyond basic Hoopty ride coverage.

I'm looking for which company it was, but one of them offered 3600 miles/year, and if you wanted to do 'events' like Power Tour, just call them and they extended coverage for that event (and return trip etc) for no extra charge. $250/year IIRC. Grundy or Leland-West I think.

Insurance that "caters" to the need of a daily driver will not likely cover my Charger for what it's worth in case of a loss. It'll just be looked at as a beater with 40+ years of depreciation under it's belt.  That's the problem. I thought that the "idea" behind collector car insurance was so that in case of an accident it will be taken care of correctly and they will know the real value of the car. I understand what you are saying but I don't think wanting to drive the car should mean that I don't deserve to protect it as well as anyone else's in case of a loss. On that note, it is nice to hear that Hagarty doesn't seem to be on too much about the mileage. And it is in a lockable garage, so I might have a fighting chance with them.

Doesn't All State cover classic cars? I remember someone using one of the big companies and they covered the car for it's real value (ie not your basic 40 year old pile worth $250 in a wreck).

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Before I found Hagerty, while I was looking for specialized collector car insurance, my Charger was insured through Farmers.  Although I was concerned with the same issue you have, they did not simply throw the Charger into the "40 year old beater" category.  They recognized the market value of the car and it helped that I had a professional appraisal to provide.  Its funny too because I specifically told them a vintage Charger is not akin to an early 70's Pinto, and shouldn't be valued as such.  I was prepared to send examples of Chargers that were for sale to underscore my point but they agreed to recognize the ballpark value of the car.  Then I found Hagerty and moved it to them because the rate was much cheaper.  The reason the rate is cheaper is because the assumption is that these cars are not daily drivers.  Their (Hagerty's) exposure is much less.  If I were driving my Charger every day, I would continue to insure it through Farmers.  My daily driver is still insured through them.  Otherwise there is risk of being dropped - or worse having a claim denied.  Hagerty may not expressly limit how many miles you drive the car a year but they may ask if it is your primary source of transportation.

If its not going to qualify for a collector car market I would advise going with a standard market stated policy with a company that actually comes out and looks at the car and gives you an insurance appraisal. True, its no guarantee like agreed and they will still only give you ACV up to the stated amount, BUT you will at least have an apraisal from the company of what they feel the car is worth.
Again its not agreed, but is the next best thing in some cases. Just be sure its a company that has an insurance appraiser look at all the cars they write on stated policies. If you dont like the value they give you can try to try to find another company, but at least you know where they value it before you have a claim.
If they dont look at the car and just ask you what the car is worth and put it on the policy, then you basically have an ACV policy with a cap.
Im not sure how many companys actually use insurance appraisers, but they are out there. I can only speak for OHIO though.
Be aware that insurance varys from state to state and company to company, your best bet is to get in contact with an agent or broker in your area.
Hope this helps

I tried Hagerty and I said I drive it 3-4 days a week and they denied me just for that. They say that its unlimited mileage but they only want you to drive once a week or less. Get the car appraised and have the insurance company look over the appraisal to make sure they can cover it, and dont go cheap on the coverage.  :Twocents:

Thanks for all of the information everyone.  :2thumbs: I understand classic car insurance better now. Its good to know that some or most of the "regular" companies will recognize the value. Now I guess the only thing left to do is some homework on some of the companies and consider getting an appraisal or at least documenting some comparable Chargers' selling prices.
