69 auto on column, new trans last year, repalced the bushings on the bar that goes from the frame to trans- better but still some play there. The problem is severe in the car, the shifter moves freely over 2 or more ranges without "catching" I have the indicater in 1 to put it in drive and then you can slide it to D without feeling any resistance/change gear. I cannnot put (keep) the car in 1 . What do I need to look for? I thank you in advance. John

look for anything loose or or possibly the shift rod is a smaller diameter than th ehole in the lever [mismatched parts]

Just 6T9 CHGR

John, looking at the FSM page 19-36 fig 7 shows a shift lever gate that might be worn out or loose.  This is the part in the column that will give you the detents in the shifter.

If you look at this pic from the new 70 LA Plant registry, it shows you this gate.

This is a great refrence section for rebuilding a steering column.  It will apply to most cars.....

If I need the parts for inside the column, who sells them or do I buy a used one at the swaps?

crawl under the car and see if you can tighten up the clamp holding the trans selector lever to the top of the tranny. It could be something as simple as the bolt coming loose and it's an easy enough fix!

John_Kunkel

You need to remove the shift linkage from the transmission shift lever and work the lever by hand. If there is any noticeable lost motion (slop) between the detents, the shift shaft is loose in the internal lever (roostercomb).
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Hi guys,

sorry for bringing up such an old topic, but i am having a similar problem with the shift on my column auto and have not had any luck finding any info on it... Mopar John, did you have any luck in resolving this?

In my case, i can pull my shift lever directly down from park strainght to 1st without really feeling any distinction between the different gears... i am away at the moment and havent had a chance to check that all the linkages are tight but i suspect the shift gate is worn... Are these available for sale anywhere?

thanks
Travis

Mine is still "loose" I have not found rebuild parts for myself to do, and have not pulled it out to get it rebuilt. MPJ
