70 Charger RT

I started the resto on my 70 RT last night and pullled the back seat out to get at the rear glass removal and flipped over the seat...  Low and behold, A BUILD SHEET under the springs.  My heart is racing a million miles a minute.  Carefully extracting the fragile paper from beneath the spring, I examined the VIN number.  No, damn.  It must have belonged to the car previous or ahead on my RT.  SO, if there's anyone out there that has a VIN number XP29G0G236534, call me and I'll send it to you.  It's a B7 color.

How do you think cars end up with wrong build sheets?  Swapping seats?

In my case, my '68 came to me with '70 high-back buckets and this sheet was in the driver's.

Many times line-workers are working on several cars at one time so it's easy to mix up build sheets from the car ahead or the car behind (or two).  Any line workers want to chime in?

What I was really hoping I would find is a build sheet that corresponds to this VIN: XS29U0G233875.  I know this is a long shot, but has anyone seen it?

I heard or read once the rear seats were in a "pile" and the correct seat didn't always make it back to the original car, Though Upon thinking about it why the heck they would put a build sheet under seat springs is beyond me to begin with.

:shruggy: & wasn't there also a build sheet or such in the engine bay as well?..  :popcrn:

i found mine behind the glove box liner is that a normal place to put them

ChgrSteve67

I found 2 in mine.

One in the back of the front passenger seat 10 VIN numbers after mine and another one in the back of the rear seat 50 VIN numbers behind mine marked Export.

I figure if a set is damaged or does not meet QA inspection they just grab the next set.
I think the seats are prebuilt and staged to install and the build sheet is not inserted at the time the seats are installed in the car.

It was an emotional roller coaster to find the first one and be disappointed. Then to find the second one and be disappointed again was devastating.

Under the Carpet

Above the Headliner

Between the gas tank and body pad

I think in the seats in the most common.

If your 5th digit on your 70 Charger is a "G", it can't be a R/T.,,Unless you have the only 318 R/T out there :smilielol:

I found mine under the front passenger seat foot-area carpet, and in the back of the backseat upright part. They were both for my car but they were pretty tattered by the time I found them.  They looked so fragile I had to laminate them and a part of the one found underneath the carpet and the one found in the backseat springs together make one that has all the parts.

They both are complete enough to read the VIN on each one and list most, if not all, the components and accessories on the Charger from the factory. Guess I got a little lucky.

Yes I read that, but it would have been the first thing that I read...Too many folks out there think that they have a R/T and when I tell them it's just 318 car, they get mad and tell me I am wrong....I know this is not the case here....I was just saying. :Twocents:
However, you can have a 72 Rallye car with a 318...Rare, but true.

vancamp

mine was against the floor tunnel on the passenger side under the carpet and luckily complete and legible

The70RT

I got lucky and found mine in good condition, It was swinging back behind the seat all those years barley hanging by a few inches. I just seen and removed it like 4 years ago.....I have had the car since 78 and never even thought about it till I started the resto. Someone from the factory put a black slash on it  :shruggy: I found another one for a 318 car and it was under the carpet and not much more than particles.

I found the one for my 68 in great condition under the rear seat. I then found a 2nd copy of the same sheet that was written on behind the glove box. I never knew there might be two sheets for one car.

Alaskan_TA

Some cars have 5 sheets in them.

When the cars were built, broadcast sheets were printed out in ALL the sub-assembly areas in the plant at the same time. Similar to a radio 'broadcast' except that everyone got a copy intead of listening to it. So, each car may have had 80-100 sheets printed for it originally.

As far as the broadcast sheets in the seats go, they ended up in the wrong cars at times because once the seat was built that broadcast sheets job was done. The trim shop built the seats & forwarded them to the main assembly line. The people there just grabbed a seat the right style & color for the car & bolted it in.

If you have not searched EVERYWHERE, please do so now. If you find any sheets to other cars, please report them to the registry for your make & model if there is one. It really helps guys like me figure out how the plants were run since cars were often built WAY out of VIN order. I have broadcast sheet info on file for a few cars built one right after the other, but the VINs are thousands apart & the scheduled production dates are weeks off.

Please report what you find & help us learn.

List of places to look;

Taped to the back side / top of the glove box insert.
Under the front bucket seats in the springs
Inside the bucket seat backs
Under the rear seat bottom
In the rear seat back.
Under the package tray(speaker shelf)
Under the carpet

70 Charger RT

Well here's some more news.  As you know when I pulled out the back seat a few days ago I found the wrong build sheet.  Well tonight I pulled out the front passenger bucket and low and behold there's another buid sheet.  This one was in really rough shape as it was tangled amoungst a hornets nest.  After carefully removing it and piecing together small pieces, I found it was the same VIN number as the back seat that I found earlier.  Buuuuuuuuuuuut when I pulled the drivers seat, there was even another build sheet,  holy crap!  I couldn't beleive I had found three build sheets in this car.  But not only did I find another build sheet, it was the correct VIN.  Yippppppppppppeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!  It's in rough shape but most of it is still legible.  Right now I'm happier than pig n sh*t! :o

70 Charger RT

Here's a question for you guys.  Now that I have the build sheet, I want to decode it.  Yes there are lots of broadcast decoders out there that tell you for example B51 is power brakes.   But is there a broadcast decoder that tells you for example what "1 5" means under glass?  Or what 794 means under rear spring?  You get the idea.

Thanks,

use this one and just use the alphabet symbol that goes with the code .  The code "1 5" is actually "G15" on the buildsheet and the coded plate. In 1969 G15 was "Tinted windshield only" , no tinted side windows.
