Going under the knife tomorrow.....Yikes!

Well, I went and had the dreaded procedure all us men hate to think about but should have done - Colonoscapy! I'm only 42 but my family doctor really believes they should be done before 50 when mosts Docs recommend them. So I took his advise, sucked up my fear of embarrassment, and had it done. Worst part was the crap they make you drink to clean you out the night before. Anyway, it wasn't that bad. After initial check-in you end up sitting in a waiting room full of other people, who like you, are wearing the fashionable hospital gown and waiting for their turn to be on the big screen TV in the exam room. Once my turn came they led me into the room that resembles an O.R. from Grey's Anatomy and asked me to get on the table. They then told me they were going to start some meds that would make me drowsy but not completely unconscious. I told the Doc I'd prefer to be completely knocked out. I said, "I want to wake up like a 20 year old girl after a frat party--- with a sore bum but no memory of the night before!" He laughed and the last words I remember were, lay on your side and bring your knees to your chest. Next thing they I knew it was all over. I had a follow up with the doc a few weeks later. I went in expecting a quick routine visit. Turned out not to be so. Doc laid out some pics of his little exploration and pointed out a red mass that he said he biopsied. Now I was nervous!! He said it was benign but is the type of tumor they know has a high probability of being cancer. Because of it's size and location he couldn't remove it during the colonoscapy which is what they usually can do with smaller polyps. So 9am tomorrow I am getting cut open to have a piece of my colon as well as my appendix , which is also in the area of the tumor, removed.

I share this story with you guys to encourage you all to get out there and get a colonoscapy!!! Had I waited till I was 50 who knows if the outcome or prognosis would be a promising as it is expected to be after tomorrows procedure.

Wish me luck!

Darren

I'm wishing you good luck and a speedy recovery. I had the 'ole colonoscopy a few years ago. All good (what they found, that is). There is something slightly amoral about the procedure, though.  :P

Just had a kidney stone blasted a few months ago. Getting older does have a few disadvantages....

I've been waiting. This all happened in September and today was the soonest they could get me in to operate.

Good luck and hope everything goes well. Had my first colonoscopy this year at age 52... yeah, I delayed a little. Again, like others, for no good reason. The prep was the worst part of it, the procedure itself is painless. Got a clean bill of health myself (yep, I'm a perfect a-hole....), so the delay didn't hurt me. Unfortunately, I work with a guy who put it off until he was 60, and he was diagnosed with cancer. After seeing what he went through, that's what prompted me to do it. It's a small price to pay given the alternative!

Like I said, I'm glad my Doc pushed me to get it early or this situation could have been worse.

Obviously this is was a good thing to have the test down at an early age.  I just had a friend that went through the same thing.  If it's in the family history, you need to do it..  I have another year and will have it done.

Good luck today!

I had it done this fall, for the first time(I'm 53), andit wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. If I would have known it was that easy, I would have done it sooner. Good luck with your surgery. :2thumbs:

It's good that they found a problem early and can deal with it before it gets serious.  I've had a few colonoscopies, and colon cancer deaths run in the family so I started earlier than most.  Last time I had an endoscopy and colonoscopy done at the same time; with the colonoscopy first.  The last thing I asked the doc before being comfortably sedated was to be sure they changed tools between the procedures.  We both laughed and I took a nap.  No discounts for volume business and I don't need to see the pictures if all is good.

Hope the surgery turns out well.

Sydmoe, It'll be a cakewalk! The worst part is just being in a hospital. Get well soon.

Best of luck, at 54 it's probably something I should be considering.

Best wishes with the surgery, it isnt bad at all, unless like me i insisted to my doc to have one at 34 and found out i was stage 3, they ended up removing all o my colon and doing a resectioning dont wish that on anyone. i go back every year for checkups and so far i am five years out as of august.

That was almost 4 years ago and he is cancer free still. Wasn't prior to the surgery. Get this done...we girls love you guys and want you around!
