Edelbrock Performer RPM fit under flat hood on 71???

I'm getting down to the wire. Starting the engine build this weekend and plan on finishing it up next weekend. I still haven't bought an intake and carb. I was wondering if any of you have been able to fit an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake on top of a 440 under a flat hood on a 3rd gen Charger or if you know if it will fit or not. If not, what intake do you guys recommend? The regular Edelbrock Performer. I'm looking for a dual plane intake that works best with a 500 stroker build in front of a 5 spd manual.

Thanks,

Adam

My 440/RPM/ 3X14 dropbase air cleaner on my 73 fits, but the wing nut on the air cleaner rubs the hood.

A ch4b or SD intake would give you some breathing room.

Have a VFN bulge hood now with a 4X14 specter dual snorkle airfilter and if you push down on the bulge above the aircleaner after about 3/8" of deflection you can feel the aircleaner.

Specter makes a couple of intake tubes with remote filters like modern engines use and it fits a standard 4bbl. Never used one though.  :shruggy:

I have an Edelbrock performer dual plane intake with a edelbrock carb on my 383, 71 Charger, flat hood. I have the large air cleaner with the dropped base. It just clears. Just use some playdoh to check your clearance before you slam the hood shut.

NH Charger/flyinlow,

Just to clarify, you have the Edelbrock Performer and not the Performer RPM, correct? So since the RPM style is 1.7" taller than the stock manifold, and based on what you're saying, there is pretty much no way I'm getting the RPM under my hood?

As far as the CH4B goes, that's what I have on my current setup. Do you think that would be a good intake for a 500 stroker? I guess I could reuse it. Also, do you have a link for that specter setup you have. I found their website, but I'm having difficulty finding something for my application.

Thanks,
Adam

440 / rpm heads/rpm intake/ 3X14 Jegs drop base air cleaner/ Schumacher motor mounts that let you put a 440 in a 318 k framed car. Engine appears to be in the stock location. The hood closes, but the air cleaner nut rubs the bottom of the hood when the engine torques. The schumacher mounts are poly, so the engine can't move much.
I don't want to mislead you because my 73 has a totally different k frame and engine mounts than your 71.
The ch4b tested well . Slightly less then the RPM, in a ten intake comparison.
Don't know about your stroker question. It doesn't cost much to try it and you avoid all the throttle/kickdown bracket hassles you have with the taller RPM intake.

I cannot answer your question directly.  My gut feeling is that you can make it work, but you might need to experiment a little.  Generally speaking, if you have 2" of clearance between the carb/air cleaner flange and the hood, you can make it work.  The RPM is an inch taller than CH4B.  If you got the CH4B to work without even trying, you can probably find the additional inch to get the RPM to work.

The CH4B is a good manifold and depending on your power level, might not hurt you too much.  You will want to mill out most of the plenum divider on a 500 inch motor

do you have any pics of your setup? with the bulge hood? i have trouble closing my hood due to the wing nut on top of the air filter and my edelbrock performer intake had to put a dent in the framing of the hoods underside to get it to clear this is on my 73 challenger with 440 and a K&N drop base filter.

With this style air cleaner the nut/stud won't be a problem.  find a base with a full 2" drop.
