What Is That Old Mopar Smell?

Does anyone know what I mean? Nearly every old Mopar i've been in or been near has the same smell coming from the interior? At first I thought it's the vinyl but i've smelt the smell with Mopars with aftermarket seats, it's not a bad smell, it's a combination of hot oil and dampness I think, I went to look at a 68 Charger today that is fully restored and soon as I walked across the showroom near to it I got the whiff of it, i've had loads of old Mustangs and they've never had this smell, sorry it's a bit of a weird question : )

I know what you mean but I can't help answer what it is.
Old Chevy's have a different but distinct smell too.

Ghoste

I think it's just a mixture of the various plastics and vinyls each mfg used.  It has become a comforting smell to me.

I love the smell of an original Muscle era Mopar. I wish they could bottle it,cause Everything in mine is new therefor doesn't have that fragrance.

If you're from the great NW it's all the above mixed with mildew.

Ghoste

Once the wiper seals dry out and the car gets driven in the rain once or twice, it's abut the same here.

My '68 has the original interior yet and it has the distinct smell of mothballs from years of storage. My dad used to put them everywhere to keep mice out....it didn't work.  :'(

I love that vintage Mopar smell.  One of the joys of owning one of these cars.  Mixed with black gas, oil, and burning rubber - its a heady aroma!

Mouse poop in a Mopar has a distictive smell, it comes from the ink in what was your broadcast sheet.

Oh yes, I know the NW Mopar smell all too well, not so much now, as I finally have them all under cover.

On my 70 the stink of the plastic seat backs is horrible, they are in such bad shape I'm replacing both bucket seats with aftermarket!  :eek2: It costs too much to restore everything, like a grand for all the stuff to do both!

70charginglizard

I personally like that smell both from the interior and the exterior after coming home from a drive when you slip it in the garage you get that residual burnt fuel smell lingering in the garage from the tail pipes or something. Sweet as pie!

Arigmaster

I like that smell... BTW... "Bounce" dryer sheets worked to keep the mice out of mine when it was stored.

b5blue

You guys are taking about the heady aroma of aged automobiles, I gave a friend a ride at work and the next day I overheard him warning the other guys that ol' blue's funk stunk like a crack whores you know what,  :eek2:  I've got the interior mostly gutted, dash is there with the old A/C removed and the 40 year old headliner but the seats were all recovered in the wrong shade of blue over 20 years ago. (Mildew was rampant due to leaks and sitting outside as just a race only car) I'm thinking that the 12 stray cats that kept my car company for many years may have added a certain "something" to the mix.  When I'm done there won't be any foam or plastic left from that era of the cars history. (The good news is mice and rats want NOTHING to do with my car!)

"smells like........Victory!"

I get in my charger and it's like going back in time.  My aunt had a 70 coronet 4 door we used to ride in as kids, grandma had a 68 dart.  It totally takes me back.

Wicked72

My first charger the smell was comforting...I even said that in my build post awhile back lol. My current charger.....well that was noted too and umm yeah mouse poop would have been nice but I got gallons of toxic roof rat poo.. :eek2:
