Will we ever see a new car with a REAL trunk and hood again?

These new car designs just suck!! Why do the designers make the trunk shorter and shorter every year? To me  some of the best designs of the 60's were due to the car length and trunk/hood length. Was there a secret order handed down in detroit, Japan etc. that cars can no longer have a real trunk?

I'm not saying the trunk needs to be as long as a 69 Cadillac trunk, but there should be something back there  :smilielol:

The issue is "overhang" look ath eh modern Auto the distance between the rear/front of the car and the tire is minimized in pretty much all cases. there are lots of reasons for this if you look at the old LHS Chryslers they were the best examples especially when compared to the 300M. I wouldn't want the extra bulk of an LHS myself, while the M is perfect.

next time you think about it measure the rear overhang of your old school charger then compare it to say a 5 series BMW.

I miss them too, for me the LHS was a better looking car, liked the NY'er on that platform before it was canceled too.  My 69 Town & Country has a rear overhang over 3ft, close to 3.5foot if you include the bumper, and yet it seems balance with the long, long, long hood on the car. Sad to say that the best era of car design is 40 years ago. JMO, MPJ

The Ford Crown Vic still has a trunk but it's scheduled to die in 2011. The last body on frame car in the world.

The largest trunk I've ever seen was my 70 Chevy Caprice ( 454  :yesnod: ).  The model with the short curved roof as they made a fast back looking model also that year.  You would be shocked to see how big and long the trunk was.  About as big and long as the hood was.

Just found an ebay picture from an 70 Impala cuctom with that roof line.
This car was sold many years ago to somebody in Wisconsin. I now am retired and living in Florida.

Had a '72 Lincoln Continental that you could put 6 bodies in the trunk. You could also sleep on the backseat without much fuss it was huge. Drove that thing to tend bar and when someone backed into you...it crunched their car and scratched the chrome on the Continental. Felt safe driving home! I could also put a full size playpen in the trunk and all the bags needed when kids are that age. Now parents have all kinds of stuff, including playpens, that shrink to nothing and will fit in the tiny trunks.

One of my favorite cars is the 80-90 Chevy Caprice because of the size and durability. I used to have a 2 door chevy caprice in college. I was gonna try to turn into a muscle car because it was a 2 door. It was similar to this one. This is how a car should be proportioned.  :yesnod:

Modern cars are all built to have a larger passenger cabin than the model's size really allows for.  So they're swollen up like a puffer fish.  If that's not enough, the crash standards & aero requirements are finishing the job.

Look how long the trunk is on this 69 Superbee, further proof that a longer trunk and hood just look better.

They just don't make cars like they loose to back in the day. Most cars of today are almost plastic and like bumber cars.  :shruggy:

Even more room in a Dart with the recessed spare tire.  I could fit two full size bicycles in there by loosening the handle bars.

my mom has the 95 buick roadmaster. her daily car that cruises everywhere. that thing has a monster trunk. she wanted it for its weight and size. she likes the way it sets into a corner, just like the 72 newyorker that she used to have.

yeah, I remember that, the bug marsh mellow cars would get "into a Set". I knew full well though they get all squirrely  if you twitched the wheel just a tad,.. the tire's squeel would remind you it was at 9/10s and then your trunk would be your hood...  :eek2:
