4spd transmission clutch effort

Sitting around tonight wondering about how the 4spd Chargers ride.

So you guys with 4spd transmissions, I believe that they are not power assisted and as such can require a leg effort. How bad is it driving in traffic and around town? The old 76 Jeep CJ5 I owned in High school had a 3spd manual trans and it required a bit of effort to manipulate. Took a while to get used to as well after being lulled into complacency with the nice power assisted ones.

When I drive my 4-speed it is all giggles and smiles.  ;)  :yesnod:  I never think about my left leg even in traffic (except for that time driving around San Fran following Brock up some very steep hills with stop signs  :brickwall:). The pedal effort is a lot easier than that Chevy Nova with the 3-speed Hurst tranny I drove back in the day. A lot easier.

It is certainly harder than a new compact, but it's a lot more fun too.  Not surprisingly, it's the same reason for being more fun as it is needing the heavier clutch. :D

Mine has (had) a 3500lb Hays in it, I'm replacing it with a Centerforce in the interest of drivability...and my bad knee.

I have a centerforce heavy enough to hold my 700 horse Hemi and the pedal effert is almost as nice as a hydrolic clutch.....not quite,but close.
68 Charger R/t white with black v/t and red tailstripe. 440 4 speed ,black interior
68 383 auto with a/c and power windows. Now 440 4 speed jj1 gold black interior .
My Charger is a hybrid car, it burns gas and rubber............

It depends on which clutch you have. The original Borg and Beck style require some effort. If I remember right, the clutch springs are something like 700 pounds (but with the "lever" actions of the pedal and linkage you don't push that). The factory added an "overcenter spring" to help but it's still stiff and tough on your leg in traffic (I removed the spring on mine so it's a real challenge!). Newer designs like the Centerforce units require much less effort. You must remember to remove the overcenter spring if you switch to one of these or it will be partially engaging the clutch all the time.

i'm also running a centerforce clutch and its pretty much effortless. I do a lot of in town driving.

I recently had to decide on whether to put in another Borg and Beck style clutch or go with the newer Centerforce design. I ultimately decided on the the Borg and Beck.

I'm old school for sure.

My F350 is a 6spd manual.....Its a hydro but its still a beast to throw down the clutch... 4spd is still easier

I've got a McCleod Street Twin. It is easier than pushing a Borg & Beck, but not as easy as a Hydraulic clutch.

I drive my car a lot!  Went with the McLeod centrifugal set up (Center Force Design) and LOVE it.  Would not go back to the Borg and Beck.  60 years old and football injuries have taken their toll.  I can still enjoy the 4 speed and it is the most fun you can have legally.

i also have a centerforce cultch in my car.after driveing a tractor trailer for the past 56 years i dont notice any differance. LOL
