Couple Gives Away $11.2M in Lottery Winnings: 'What You've Never Had, You Never Miss'

By Marty Cox
Nov 6, 2010

Violet and Allen Large gave away $11.2 million in lottery winnings.  She said: "What you've never had, you never miss" and he added the lottery win could have been "a big headache."

The elderly Canadian couple won the lottery jackpot, but they live in rural Nova Scotia and Violet and Allen Large decided they had no need for all that money and decided others did.

The generous pair used the lottery money to donate to churches, animal charities, hospitals and other causes.

The Larges, who are both retired, said the money will be put to good use.  They did keep some of it, but were concerned about people trying to take advantage.

Violet Large is recovering from cancer said giving all of that money away "made us feel good," and added "there's so much good being done with that money."

MSNBC reveals the money was divided and given to:

* the local fire department;
* churches;
* cemeteries;
* the Red Cross;
* the Salvation Army;
* hospitals in Truro and Halifax that treated Violet Large for cancer;
* and organizations that fight cancer, Alzheimer's disease and diabetes.

Very commendable. :2thumbs: And I bet that if Violet has to go back to the hospitals in Truro and Halifax she'll be well taken care of.

It was a good deed but.......there is no way I could give away all that money :rotz: I notice it said they kept some of it, hopefully it was enough to keep them both comfortable for the rest of their lives. Money is hard to come by in these economic dark days.

They won $12M so looks like they only kept $800k

i actually thought the same thing... why waste the dough if you dont want it?  its not like winning is a guarantee.. they just got lucky.  quite a quandary they must have been in.

May they played it just for the fun of it  :scratchchin:, or just something to do  :scratchchin: . Or maybe they just needed some money and not a whole lot of it.  :shruggy:

True, however being elderly means they risk going to a nursing home...My aunt was there before she died and it was 3K a month to live there....That adds up real quick...Hope they don't regret it. :Twocents:

If I was very old with no kids, I might do something like that...I think I'd have kept more of it and willed it out though.
