I looked in both my '68 & '71 FSM, and neither one shows that symbol for a marking of oversize or undersize components.

terrible one

It looks like an A. If so, then it means .020 oversized bore as tan top said :2thumbs:

Y'all might want to check out this thread on engine marking:

For anyone that may not know......

The vehicle ID numbers including engine stampings are generally outlined in the TSBs (Technical Service Bulletins) for the model year in question. This TSB is usually the first one in Chapter 25 - Miscellaneous.

To read the 1969 TSB about these numbers, go to the link below & drop down to No. D69-25-1, it is 8 pages long;

i was told from 440 source hp 1 was like with six pack rods or hp heads and hp2 was 2 hp options like six pack rods and hp heads both on that motor 1968 motor maunal says there was only 5hp diffrence between hp heads and stock example 383 with no codes stamped on top of id block was 330 hp and and if it was stamped hp it was a 335 hp block

I'm sorry but this is incorrect. The 1 or 2 only indicate which shift the engine was assembled.

Yes, the HP stamp on the block indicates the assembly recieved things like a different cam and windage tray. There are no HP and non HP heads. The engines used the same heads.

The HP1 And HP2 are the same from what I gathered no difference in HP ratings or options the 1 and 2 simply mean what shift the casting was poured on the HP 1 was poured on first shift and HP2 was done on second shift I'm not sure if they are on 8 or a 12 hour work schedule but I haven't seen any blocks marked with a HP3 nor has the one site I got the info from someone correct me if I'm wrong on anything

He's referring to the stampings on the pad, which relate to assembly. The blocks themselves do not have HP specific casting. The stamped HP designation comes from components used for assembling the engine, not from the block casting. The block castings do have a D or N clock cast into the sides indicating a time the block was cast.
