How can I make my 72 look into this?

I am going to get my dads 72 Charger SE(400 2barrel) pretty soon and its in a pretty rough shape but I don't mind I'm thinking about painting it orange 
and I've always like the Olympia Charger idk why but I would like to know if you guys know what they did to the body of this charger cause it doesn't look original one bit I would plan on making it like such without the welded doors, what do you guys think?

the main difference i see is that it looks like they have opened up the wheel wells some taking out the lip that folds back in towards the tire making the sides look flatter around the tires. mabey to hold those larger tire sizes. other than that the lines all look the same. good look for that car. i guess you can either weld metal in to get that look, or cut them out like they did.

That Olympia car is a recreation using a '73/'74 body. Might be why it doesn't look right to you.

I'm afraid there won't be any easy way to get that wheel/tire/body stance from a stock Charger unibody. 

Those race cars had the whole lower half of the car attached to the upper half closer together than a stock unibody.  The floorpan and the roof skin were closer together than stock.  You could lower a street car down somewhat, but you're not getting close to the look of those old racecars unless you want the framerails to be so close to the pavement that you can't realistically drive it.

Same with the wheels & wheelwells.  Not happening without some serious chopping of the sheetmetal.



In the pics, I get the feeling there is't much original unmodified sheemetal below the height of the door handles.  It's probably handformed sheetmetal like with most stock cars from this era and later.

Yeah I thought so, well is there any advice to get a semi look a like, wonder what kind of tires it has

Yeah those tires would be awsome on dry days, but hit a patch of leaves or get caught in the rain and you might as well park it. You can get tires with the wall lettering and if you really want a particular set then you can just get tire paint and take a little time to get the effect you want.

400's can be pretty badass when they're built up with a good 4bbl, headers etc

 Well, you could research the "stroker 400"s... they are supposed to be pretty bad assed... but i don't see any evidence your up to such a modified car... sometimes guys think they want the most baddest ass car out there, but the vehicle turns out to be such a can 'o worms in their build - they end up trying to get out from under the mess at a huge loss of time and money...
just my two pennies..  good luck, hope you have an unlimited budget.

Well for now I kinda do have a big budget and Im in no hurry im not saying I want this bad boy out in the streets in a month or two its going to take a while to perfect it so Im not worried about that and even at that I know im still going to be messing with it later

I've seen that car in person. In fact, that looks like the photo I took outside the 4th Ave Alehouse in Olympia WA.

That car is the real deal Nascar from the 70's. It was repainted to look like the Oly special which was actually a 71-72. Though it may not look it, the Body is HEAVILY worked over and you won't be able to make your car look quite like that without serious chopping and hacking of sheet metal, etc.

You can simulate the appearance if you are willing to lower the car and cut your wheel wells.

you can take your 400 block and clean it up, put a nice mid cam in there and flat top pistons, find a pair of older 383 heads "closed chamber" 4bbl intake and carb. you basically will have a bored out 383 with a little pop to it. will be all you need to smoke the tires but will also be driveable.

  IF I end up doing a stocker out of my 68 I was going to use 2"spacers in the rear and 2" drop spindles in the front to lower it.  Dropping  a body down over the floor pan  is WAY to much work for  what you would get in return for a street vehicle.

The real nascar was a '74 driven by Hershal McGriff. Based on the body seams, stance, roll cage, location of the hood pins, this could possibly be a race car converted to street car or a lotta work done to go the other way. As for the tires, you can get new ones off eBay for $45 and they are the correct era white letter eagle without the #1.
