i don't know if it really makes a difference painting the block, but i bet they paint radiators black for a reason...

Surface material aside (an important consideration in itself), black absorbs external heat and radiates internal heat more than any other coloured body, 4402tuff4u posted the equation...it is a thermodynamic fact.

Would it show a difference?  Probably much less than changing from a 190* to a 180* thermostat.  I would not bother painting it black thinking you were going to make the car run much cooler, heat taken away conductively by a liquid is far greater than heat lost radiately and convectively from the outermost surface of an object.

I think a black engine looks damn cool, however, and might consider doing this on mine...I'm not big on the coulor-correct pale greyish-blue and there are lots of SHO motors out there...hmmm...maybe Go Green?  ;D

i helped rebuild a 302 once that we painted neon green  :P
Daddy ran whiskey in a big black dodge
bought it at an auction at the masons lodge,
Johnson County Sherriff painted on the side,
just shot a coat of primer then he looked inside,
well him and my uncle tore that engine down,
I still remember that rumblin' sound.....

yeah - a guy in our car club has a sublime challenger with a sublime green engine block...       hell my uncle had a 1959 El Camino and he painted the engine white...
