Frame reinforcement for 71 with 512 Stroker????

So as I'm sure some of you are aware, I'm dropping a 512 stroker in my 71. It's going to have a 5 sp manual with (hopefully) a Dana 60 rear with 3.55's and sure grip. I'm also thinking about moving the springs inboard so I can fit some fatter tires in the rear. So my question is, do I need to do any kind of reinforcement to the car's frame since I'll be pushing so much torque? If so, what's the best way to do it? Engine compartment braces?

Frame reinforcement is a good idea, even on a 90 HP slant six. I'm not sure what is out there for '71s, but I'd definetly go with subframe connectors or torque boxes at a minumum.

I have yet to hear one single person ever say they regret putting work into stiffening the chassis.  Stock motor or not, stock tires or not, rusty car or not, whatever.


Give it subframe connectors, factory-style torque boxes at the rockers, and maybe the lower rad support from XV.  That's the big easy gains.

you also get alot of flex in the stock K member especially around the power steering box, the mag that had the Green Brick doing the One Lap of America showed all the extra gussets they welded in to strenghen everything.  of course most of it was for the road courses but reduced flex is still reduced flex

Check with XV Motorsports, they sell some nice stuff for that.

this can also be done at home with a MIG welder -  or someone who is local to you for a LOT cheaper...   

I've done this for quite a few customers of mine -  I used the logic stated above...    strengthening is a good thing - wherever you can do it -  do it.
