Hi there,

I am trying to decode my engine, i understand that its a 440 but what year exactly and other information evades me.  :shruggy:
Any expert that would lend me his knowledge?

Any help would be very much appreciated!

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

The July 24, 1969 casting date appears above the block casting number 2536430 which is the basic '66-'72 440 casting number, the dash 10 is a mold core revision number.

The arrow points to the D to show that it was cast on the Day shift, the dot in the clock symbol shows that it was the second pour of the shift.

G is the year code for 1970, 440 is the displacement and 2 10 is the assembly date February 10 (1970). Don't know what the inverted 5 is about but the absence of a stamped HP makes it a standard (350 hp) 440.

Note that there is over six months between the casting date and the assembly date, so much for SPD predictions.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Isn't "F" the code for 1970? Looks like over 18 months to me.

John, I think Troy has it..."G" code = 1971.

Original poster...what is the VIN on the driver's side?
Seeking information on '69 St. Louis plant VINs, SPDs and VONs. Buld sheets and tag pictures appreciated. Over 3,000 on file thanks to people like you.

That's whats made the questions pop up in my head. Cast in 1969 and assembled in 1971  :scratchchin:

The inverted 5 and what looks like an inverted A ? Makes me curious..

Unfortunately it is not a matching numbers car, the car is a 1968 Charger 383HP from birth. If i did my research right.

Same thing here, this was cast 4/69,came out of a 71 New Yorker with G440 before block was decked.

That's why I didn't say anything at first - because I wasn't sure I was doing it correctly (comes from only having 68s so there's less to memorize).

Thank you for the help, this is what i found out! Useful information.

1971 440
Compression ratio: 9.5:1
Horsepower (gross): 370 @ 4,600
Horsepower (net): 305 @ 4,600
Torque (gross): 480 @ 3,200
Torque (net): 400 @ 3,200
Carb: 4-barrel Carter
Intake/exhaust duration: 268° / 284°
Overlap: 46°
Base transmission: 3-spd auto
Gears:
Standard axle ratio: 3.35:1

Now, time to rip it apart and improve!  :D

John_Kunkel

The numbers above are only valid for the High Performance version, since the block isn't stamped HP it's the standard version with:

Compression: 9.0-1
Horsepower: 335
Torque: 460 ft. lbs.

The cam is milder and there was no 3.35 axle ratio available in '71, 2.76 would be more likely.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.
