The saga continues,  correct me if I am wrong,   For a points distributor   The tach wire and the power wire go on the positive side of the coil and the distributor wire and the blue wire from the engine harness go to the negative side of the coil, is that correct???   I even (hotwired) the  coil to rule out any wiring problems and had power to the negative side so the points had power BUT  the coil still won't  fire. I have tried 3 coils that I had and bought a new one and nothing,it still won't fire.  Am I right on the wires?   Any ideas? :shruggy: :brickwall:

tack wire always goes to the minus side  -  oem colored wire (Gray)
blue wire (motor harness ) goes to plus side  + :yesnod:
black wire from distributor to the minus side -

you mentioned tack wire &  Power  wire  do you mean power for the tack !! should be a switched scorce from ignition !!  accesory terminal in fuse box

SO its the blue wire from the harness that powers the coil....OK.  I have  a MP electronic ignition but I put the points dist. back in trying to eliminate variables  trying to get this thing to start.   I left the power wire from the electronic ig. on the coil hense the power wire.  I also need the directions  (what color wires) to install the harness for the MP system.  ALSO could I have killed the coil by hooking it up wrong? :slap:

 MP electronic ignition harness !!

blue wire with  yellow tracer stripe - goes to the running side of the ballast resistor !!  the side that only has one blue wire going to it , from the factory harness !   , just use a piggie back spade terminal to conect the ECU blue /yellow wire

black wire with yellow tracer stripe - goes to the minus - side of the coil

the green /brownishredish tracer wire is not used , just insulate & tape up out the way in the harness if your only using two prong ballast resistor/4 pin ECU

im thinking  , you have a duel field alternator & 70 & up electronic voltage regulator ??
about the coil wiring backwards
!! i have heard of it being done by accedent & the car still running , but never tried it my self or would even consider trying  :shruggy:

also make sure you have a good ground to the ECU body , clean off paint around the mounting holes & have rustfree/ new mounting bolts /screws , what i done was to run an extra ground wire to the body , just to be on the safe side !! i'm nutts like that  :yesnod:

I do have a dual field alternator but one field is grounded. The regulator is an MP blue  13.5 volt for a 69 and down.   Switching wires on the coil is just a case of brain damage, nothing else :brickwall:   The car ran fine till all this crap started and it kept getting worse till it wouldn't start at all.

as far as im aware , the blue 13.5 is a race only piece , not continious use !!  also you should   run the 70 & up alternator (duel field ) &  its electronic regulator !!

You are right it is a race piece but I thought it was the only regulator for electronic ignition.

although having said all this ,  there is a OEM looking  regulator with electronic guts ,( as an upgrade ) for a single field  alternator  , but  that set up was never designed with electronic ignition in mind

How does the reluctor  come off the distributor shaft? I can see a very small snap ring down in the center of the dist.shaft and also a very small roll pin on the outside of the shaft.  Does it have to be pressed off???? :shruggy:

there is a tiny roll pin holding the regulator on the shaft under tention !!   the correct way is to use a tiny puller !! a battery terminal puller is ideal !!!!  but you can carefully prise/ work the reculator  up off the shaft  , by tweaking/leavering each side , with flat blade screwdrivers !! ,

I have used, pair of them to pull it out at the same time from both sides against the housing. Easier and will get less damage ( if someone ), due will be pulled out vertically, not diagonally
