Number of pins on hood emblems

I purchased a 74 bulge hood in original paint and it has two holes to mount the hood emblem (the emblems are missing). I've seen earlier hoods with three holes on each side. When you look up a 400 Magnum emblem one catalog says for 71-74 and another catalog says 72-74. What year of 3rd gens had two holes and which had three? In 74 was the 400 Magnum the only available emblem?

Nacho-RT74

3 pins, all the years

also available:

440 Magnum

Magnum

Magnum maybe got just 2 pins

This hood must have just had the Magnum emblem, since it only has two holes. That would make sense, the shorter emblem not needing three holes. When did they just use Magnum? Smaller engine?

My '72 has the 'Magnum' emblems.  When I get home I can check to see how many holes it has.

That would be cool cargd72. Is the hood original to your car?

Nacho-RT74

74 360s got Magnum for sure

dunno if 72/74 318s too.

forgott to say, there was also 383 Magnum emblem, but of course just 71 deal and 340 Magnum between 71/73, just that you asked about 74s. And I guess everyone got same pins locations.

Dunno if 426 Hemi and 440 Sixpack emblems got same pins locations too

At the bottom of Chargd72's post it says '72 Charger SE 4bbl 318. If his hood is original, then it would be for 318s also.

Sorry E5, had a busy weekend and forgot to get pics of the 'Magnum' emblem pins.  I will be sure and do it tonight so they'll be posted by tomorrow.  But to answer your question, no.  The hood is from a '74 (no vents) so not original.  Also, it was originally a 2bbl.  I converted it to a 4bbl so it won't help much with how it came from the factory.

My holes are 3 7/8" apart, so it obviously had the Magnum emblem. Interesting how both your hoods had a third by mistake. I wonder if they starting drilling for a different emblem and then realized it should be for the Magnum. Thanks so much for your help on this, the mystery is solved!

No problem E5

Do you think there could be different emblem years that had a smaller pin gap  :shruggy:

on mine I have an extra hole what CLEARLY shows a mistake, since there is a 3 milimeters gap between them.

Now... maybe 3 pins emblems ( those with displacement ) got a diff location and they began to fit the 3 pin ones before realize it was to get just magnum ? dunno. I think both got same location pins on magum word and then the 3rd one on displacement, but could check tomorrow if an extra 400magnum set I have meets pins location with your magnum emblem
