8.1/4 gear Question need help bad!!!!

What size gears can I put In a 8.1/4 rear end befor having to Chang the carrier case
I was told after wanting any gear larger than 2.50 gears you have to chaneg to a different size
Case.
Then I was told that does not matter!?!?

I want to put 2.71 gears in but I'm super mixed up now!

 That's not much of a change..I bet you hardly notice it...You really want a 8 3/4 rearend anyway

I would have thought that your 8 1/4 would already have a 2.76 ratio
