Front Door Window Install

So I just finished cleaning, painting, lubing and installing all of the door glass and run channels. Everything for the most part went together fine. Now that I replaced the felt weatherstripping that runs inside the front wing window channel for the door glass, it is extremely hard for the window to roll up or down.

I tried the install two different ways. First I let the seal wrap around the run channel onto the chrome on the vent window: Rolled up super smooth but did not look right as the window went up, you could clearly see the seal outside of the channel and flapped over the chrome.

Second, I stuck the entire seal inside the channel. Looks much better and what I would consider to be "correct", but I run into my current problem of it being way to hard to roll the windows up. Everything has been lubed up: Rollers, the gears behind the window crank, and the run channels.

Any ideas, or will it just be like this since it is brand new???????

if thats the part , i'm thinking of !!  the felt seal  , is mounted on the front edge of the door glass , plastic clips & a steel pins through the glass to hold the seal in  the correct position !  vent window & door glass are fitted togeather !   assemble the door glass in the vent window frame off the car ! up side down  , by sliding it up from the bottom ,  then  & carefully lower the whole assembly into the door !

Yes, that is exactly what I did. Everything fit together nicely except how that front felt seal causes the front glass to be too tight inside the vent window channel.

oh right  got it now !! mine was the same on a passanger side ! ,what i done was , take the whole assembly back out , slide the door glass out from the vent window frame , take a large flat screw driver or similar & tweak the channel glass channel , by opening it up ! making it a little wider ! !

you might be able to tweak it enough , with out taking it back out !  but i ended up having to !!  :icon_smile_blackeye:

Well I think Im gonna give it a shot. I get a little too excited sometimes and decided to go ahead and put on the vapor barrier already. I figured it would eventually "work itself out" and I wanted to see some actual progress on the car. So I will try to just pull up the barrier a little to try and pry it apart. Hopefully I wont have to pull everything back out as I am still having some alignment issues that I cant figure out. I think the issues are being caused by the window mouldings though. We will see.

Actually just thinking about this subject again I've had a thought.
The winding up of the glass may be tight if the quarter window (QW) frame isn't fitted "square" enough to the door.
Since the doorglass slides in that front channel it makes sense that the channel should be as parallel as possible to the window to minimise friction.
If the QW frame is tilted too far backwards there will be difficulty winding up.
I would be adjusting the QW frame so it lines up right and all your gaps look good first, including with the door closed. Ensure the QW frame isn't sitting too low into the door either while yer at it.
That should "square" it all up and you may well find that the window naturally winds better with all the angles right.

I have found that if the quarter window is down the winding up and down of the door glass is a little easier.  But all my angles are spot on, it's all  perfectly aligned.
The problem could also be that the rubber weather strip on the door might roll in when winding the windows down and is then in the way when winding them back up again making it hard.
Have tried tweaking..............makes no difference.
Sometimes it's just the after market parts themselves that are just not quite right.

I have also made sure that the gap is good, which it is. I also tried doing some "prying" today with not much luck at all. Of course I didn't want to get too crazy with it. I couldn't get much movement out of the window channel. It would pry apart, but then go back to original spot as soon as I took pressure off of it.  :shruggy:

Fred if you've fitted new glass, it will most likely be aftermarket.
Possibly the curve isn't spot on???
I know there have been a few people here in Oz that have been having trouble with the curve on the repro glass for the Australian Chargers............
Just a thought anyway.

I believe in my case it's the curve of the glass and if that's the case there's not much I can do about it. I could try bending the channels towards the glass, that might solve the problem or I could take it out and start all over again and risk some damage or scratching with the end result being the same.

Speaking of I have had the same issue. I was wondering as well if you guys know where i could get some of the plastic window guides? I broke some in the process of installing new felts when i drop the window down

From what I understand you can still get them at the dealer. Same as used on older Dodge vans & such.

Well Guys, never say never. I lay in bed all night thinking I must have another go at my window glass and after some initial adjusting and a little more tweaking I'm happy to say they now wind up and down without any effort at all.
Turns out there's nothing wrong with the glass, it was the rear run channel. Thanks everyone  for all your input PROBLEM SOLVED!  :2thumbs:

I was also thinking of re-checking the rear channel and then I thought about when I slid the glass into the the vent windows before I put it in the car. It was still a real PITA to just slide the glass into the vent windows then. So I am still confused with this one.............

The way I installed the door glass assembly was........... I inserted the glass into the door first and as  I lowered the vent window frame into the door I fed the glass into the vent window channel. Lastly I installed the rear run channel. Then it was just a matter of making some adjustments

I have been following this thread and was able to get the front windows working. But in doing so my rear quarter glass on both sides looks to be pointing out and forward at the top. This binds the front windows. The windows are the biggest problem on this car. Does anyone know how to adjust the rear quarter glass in the '68? Do you make the rears work first and then do the fronts?

On a seperate note, when I installed the new door seals on the car they seem to be too wide and now I have to slam the doors to get them closed. Will this get better with use?

I found the same thing when I changed the seals on my doors.  I had to adjust the striker slightly and then after awhile I had to do it again.

Make sure the white plastic pieces are fully pressed into the holes in the glass. Check em without the strip to make sure, they should basically fit flush tight against the strip.... Just an idea...
