Next year's Halloween costume...

I've been wanting to do something cool for Halloween for a while now, and I've finally found something that I can't wait to get started on. I've found online some templates for building a full set of HALO 3 ODST armor. I'm picking up the first of my supplies this week.

Some of you may have heard of Pepakura, which uses 3d modeling to turn a 3d object into flat planes to make models from paper or cardstock. That's how this armor is built, then you reinforce it with fiberglass and detail it with bondo and paint. Here are some in progress pics from another person's project, and what I hope the final version will look like.

exactly. I'm willing to put in the hours and make it myself than spend a ton of cash on something anyone can buy. To me it's much more worthwhile to put in the work and say I've built it myself when someone asks where I got it.

more progress......

I've printed about 2/3s of the whole costume, and I have a few more pieces assembled. I've started fiberglassing a few pieces to get an idea of how much fiberglass I'll need. As it turns out, one layer is plenty strong so less than I thought.

I also got different color cardstock for various components just to help keep things in order. The yellow pieces are all torso and chest parts, and the leg armor will be blue and green to differentiate left and right. Everything else is white, as those parts (except the gauntlets) are not side-specific. I also started assembly on the helmet, which is extremely complex....I'm betting it will take at least another week to finish it.

More progress!

I got a large part of the torso built yesterday, and also did a little more fiberglassing on some smaller pieces. I also decided to brush a light coat of epoxy on the outside of one piece to see what would happen. I was hoping to get a better sandable surface that bondo and paint will stick to, and it worked out great. The epoxy completely impregnated the paper, and the piece is unbelievably strong now, especially with the back side fiberglassed. I'll need a lot more epoxy to do the whole thing but I was prepared for that.

How are you adjusting it to fit your body shape/size?

The guy who designed it set the files up at a default size of a 6' tall person with a 42" chest, which is very close to my measurements right now. (I'm actually on a diet regimen now so when it's done I'll hopefully be smaller). But you can adjust the scale of the files in the pepakura software to fit any person's measurements.

The gun in that picture looks like an H&K MP7 with a Suppressor on the front. Very simple to find a toy of one.

Thanks for that - If I decide to go with that weapon for this then I'll definitely look for that. I also have an airsoft pistol with a fake suppressor I'm thinking of modifying. Although if I'm feeling really ambitious (and I have the time) I may build the sniper rifle and add-ons for the sniper variant armor. There is also a pair of NVGs for the helmet that look really cool too.

Brief update, I'm rebuilding the gauntlets. I discovered I was using the wrong file, and the correct file is more accurate and a LOT less complex to build. Pics to follow soon.

This is a slightly modified repainted Nerf Longshot. Pretty badass for a 30 dollar toy.

ok, here's a few new pics. Got the first new gauntlet built, and started the pistol. Got the lower receiver, the grip (with removable magazine), the tactical light and part of the barrel shroud built. It's a tricky build but so far it's going well.

You may want to exercise some caution when you go out in that. Perhaps alert the athorities ahead of time so you aren't taken out by the local SWAT team or something. With so many crazies running around now days... Law enforcment seems to frown om people running around with very large or intimidating weapons. (real or fake)

Oh... And the banks and local quickie marts would probably freak too. Make sure you use the restroom at home before going out.

Not to worry, this is being built specifically for next Halloween. I know here in Wichita you can't wear a mask in public except on that day. As for the weapons, they will be marked with safety tips when out and about.
