I pretty much had this one logged in as gone never to live again.But its in recovery from seeing this mention bellow. Wouldnt mind seeing its transformation stages pictures or restoration development

.Dave - This one is not a re-body - A lot of people stepped-up and worked hard to save this car and I saw it a few weeks ago - The window plug is back in and it is back to being a finished original shell once again!

 Up till now I've thought the guys bringing the "FLOOD" Daytona back would get the longest road traveled award! If they bring this crispy critter back they would win hands down! I also would like to see some along the way pictures!

TT - It was dipped immediately. I'll ask the owner if it's ok to post some pics.

OK - In this pic from about 18 months ago - That's Doc on the rotator - upside down on the hoist. To the right - that's Burnt-tona before the roof got re-skinned. A labor of love by the owner and the restorer!  :2thumbs:

I'll see if I can post some others - gotta get out there and grab some recent pics

Hate to rain on someone's parade, but I don't see how the steel in that car could be safe to re-use.  Not when the fire was that severe.  That whole unibody has been heat-treated.

Heat treating would be quickly cooling something that is red hot. That didn't happen. The dipping process restored the metal to it's normal state. It is as workable as it was before the fire.

This is the guy I met at Carlisle in 2009, correct?  Really knows his stuff from what I've seen, and also seems like he would be a very patient workman (a trait I've observed in many excellent resto men).

Actually he collects old oil cans and other automotive liquids. He gave me a complete rack of STP OIL and Gas and the STP rack for it.

He has a lot of Mopar cans as well - from the 40's to the late 70's.

Hi Guys

Just to set the story straight here the burnt car in the pictures is NOT BURNTTONA. That car had glass fenders and no hood scoop.

Talk about labor of love I thought I saw Cabot fix wreck but this one was the top. Thanks to his collision back ground and drive to do things correct is what that job needed.

The list of NOS sheet metal is very extensive.

This car spend 3 years on the frame rack, put it this way Cabot had to buy a second frame rack to keep the work flowing in the shop.

That car was sold new in Hamilton Ont, and it was fixed in Hamilton Ont. Cool

"Heat Treated" was not really the right phrase but you get the idea.  

I'm just saying the whole car has been flamed until the sheetmetal sagged and then cooled down again.  I would think that is gonna affect the metallurgy one way or another.  I imagine it would be sort of like if you heated the whole thing to the sagging point with an oxy torch and then let it air cool.  (Perhaps it would come out more flexible than original?) 

The issue strikes me sort of like the subject of using weaker alloy replacement panels from Asia.  It's not a big deal to do it in some portions of the car, but when you build the whole entire unibody that way it demands more consideration.  Likewise doing some heating & cooling of the sheetmetal would not be a big deal on portions of the car, but I'm not sold on the safety of an entire body like this.

What kind of dip did they do to fix this?  I don't get it.

This is precisely the reason cars are spot welded together, rather than mig welded.
The "heat affected zone" (HAZ) outside of a conventional weld, due to it's heating, now has a different coefficient of strength. What you might refer to as temper.
Anytime you raise a metal to it's curie point (just before melting), it changes it's molecular structure.
A spot weld has the same effect, but it is much smaller, and very localized.

Ergo....unless the metal is "treated" the same as when it was newly processed, much of it's inherant strength will be negated.

This is the deep dark and dirty secret in auto restoration that few want to consider.

Here's another example: Much is said about the new cars, and their reliance on HSS, or high strength steel. Ever wonder why some cars are written off for what appears to be insignificant damage?
The truth is, you cannot straighten HSS steel after it's been bent. It becomes fatigued, that is to say, it looses it's tensile strength.

With that much heat wouldn`t the vin tag melt away along with the fender tag?.....Now days with all the AMD metal that is out I think you could fix just about any car with a lot of time and $$$$
