Just wondering how far the dipstick should extend into the pan?  I happened to notice a spare trans I had sitting in the corner of the shop tonight and the pan was off.  Looking at it it didn't seem like the dipstick extended very far into the pan.,

RD

good question, never accurately measured it... off the top of my head, i would say 1/3" from the bottom of the pan rail into the pan.  may check this tomorrow to be sure.

So it's normal for the level markings to be up inside the tube?

yes and no...

yes being that some fluid does travel up the tube, and no being that it will never travel so far that it would overflow through the dipstick hole if the dipstick tube was pulled out for some reason.

remember the dipstick tube does enter into the pan well somewhat as the tube's o-ring is located about 1/4" from the bottom of the tube.

i will get some photos tomorrow for you.

well no photos, but.. the dipstick sticks out and away from the bottom of the dipstick tube by .478"

the dipstick tube sits flush in the case and does not protrude into the transmission itself.

from the pan rail, the dipstick sticks out .25" towards the pan.

I guess it's right then.  Well now I won't worry about the one in the Charger, thanks RD.

The FULL mark on the dipstick is about 1/4" above the flat deck on the case where the tube is inserted, so the fluid level is well up into the tube.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Ghoste

So on a tangentially related note, did they make a number of different dipsticks for the 727 or was it primarily one?

John_Kunkel

All of the passenger car 727 dipsticks (except the Hemi) are the same, there is a difference in the tubes from SB to BB and year-to-year.

I can certainly understand there would be a variety of tubes.  Are they all the same length and just different shapes for differeing applications or do they change in length as well John?  (I'm just being curious here)

different shapes and the mounting tab can be located in different locations based upon SB and BB.

But do the overall lengths of the tubes vary?

I do?  Sorry.  Don't make a special trip on my account, a lot of times my questions aren't exactly "burning", I just get curious about odd things is all.
(FWIW, I very much appreciate you answering them)

RD

naah i dont mind.  its good to help.

If the length of the tubes varied the dipstick length would have to vary also. Since the dipsticks are the same length so is the tube, only the shape changes.

The only exception is the Hemi which needs a longer tube and stick to top the taller valve cover.

Well logically yes, but I wanted to make sure.  When you said the tubes varied I didn't know if you meant just the shapes or if the lengths changed as well sometimes to account for them wanting a different fill level in certain applications (which ones would have been my next annoying question had the answer been yes).
Convoluted but I wanted to know.  Thanks guys.
