Would you buy a "used" MSD 6AL?

He says it's new in the box but when I talked to him on the phone he tells me he might have used it once to test a car they thought had a faulty box. If I bought it I would save roughly $85 over the local parts store.

I would do it.  Even if it is not working, MSD will refurb it for little money.

I may have a better deal for you. PM me.

<edit>

Answering the question directly, yes I would buy a used ignition, if there is a return policy.

For less than $85 you think?

I wonder if these come with much of a warranty new? Since I might not be starting the engine for a while, let alone driving the car, any warranty will probably have expired by the time it sees much use.

warranty? not sure.. but dont get those bastards wet.. they are NOT waterproof and only a lil dab of moisture will kill them.  MSD wont warranty them if they got water inside them.  Had a friend have this issue.

How much does a new unit cost?  It can't be over $200, which to me is a bargain over an $85 unit that you don't know how it was used.  And even if MSD will fix it if it breaks, I'm sure you have better things to do than call them up, tell 'em your story, ship it off, wait 6 to 8 weeks, get it back, find out it still doesn't work right, it's now the wrong color, etc..

I totally agree. Plus the hassle of being stranded on the roadside .... The cost of a new unit is 198 dollars.

Interesting points, I didn't know.

I have a 6600 HVC box that's epoxy potted and offroad approved. Of course, retail price new is ~$480.

I would ONLY from a close friend that bought it new, as there are just too many idiots out there that can't seem to hook these things up properly to where they don't "Burn out", get wet, or just generally have an "ooopsy" when wiring them up.(Would be surprized at how many run solid core wires with MSD when it clearly states not to)...I've had a 6AL box on the Dart for over 14 years and never had a problem..One on the General Lee for almost 10 years and never had a problem..One an Christine going on 2 years, never a problem, yet, some can't go one month without blowing one up....Just like Chrysler electronic ignition boxes..I can't seem to keep 'em on my junk, but yet, others have good luck with them...

I can get a new one for $211 from the local parts store or this craigslist unit for $125. As stated above, Summit gets less than $200 but then you've got the handling fee...

I've done it a couple of times, never had any issue, but there are the pitfalls pointed out here. If it is enough of a deal and you get a dud, you can get them refurbed by the factory and possibly still come in under the new price.
Its a tough call. Maybe call MSD and ask them what it costs to refurb a unit, and factor that in to your decision. If its a wash and you don't want to deal with the downtime of a rebuild, go new.
