i have a 98 5.2 that im wanting to put in my 68 charger and was needing to know were to find the right oil pan? will a center sump oil pan work?

stingger68

OK. so what all will i need to do or what will be involved in putting this motor and tranny in my car? :shruggy:  .i have a wrecked 98 dodge ram 1500. Runs great so i have everything from the computer to the fan belt. treads, forums,  anyone?

RD

any 318 oil pan for a 68 will work on that as its a direct swap.  www.summitracing.com or ebay will have it.

secondly.. why computerized?  put a carb intake on that bad boy and a carburetor and you will never need all that computer crap.

I missed this before. You need a car oil pan. Any 318 or 340 pan should work but NOT a 360 (5.9).

Something like this:

Maybe this will help too:

For simplicity, most people will ditch the EFI and run a carb. The Magnum engines have a different timing chain cover which doesn't have provisions for a fuel pump. You can use the timing cover, pulleys, and belts from a period correct motor - they'll bolt right on. If you do this Mancini has a cam eccentric for $20 to run the pump. You'll need a normal distributor for the timing as well.

You *can* keep the EFI but you're probably on your own when it comes to the wiring. Some guys on Moparts have had success and hotrod98 here has made the swap into a Cuda.

if i ditch the EFI and computer will the Tanny still shift right or is it not computer controlled?

well.. u never said you had a OD trans you were using.  you can ditch the computer and hook up the transmission to work.  go here:

Ooops, I missed that part. The OD trans will require some modification to the cross member (and maybe the trans tunnel?). It is controlled by the engine computer but there are ways to compensate.

The stock engine and trans should physically fit without too much trouble if you want to go that way. I am not positive that the truck's "beer barrel" intake will fit under a stock Charger hood though. You could always switch to an M1 or the Edelbrock RPM that Hughes engines modifies for EFI. You will need a shorter drive shaft too. As I said, hooking up the wiring will take some thought and planning. You'll also need to make sure to install the oxygen sensor in the exhaust. This is exactly what hotrod98 did (yanked the whole mess out of a wrecked truck and stuck it straight into the Cuda). I think they've been averaging around or over 26 mpg and it has plenty of power/torque for cruising.

a friend of mine did it on his cuda. Just needed to modify the small crossmember, not the tunnel, and I think activates the OD by a switch, manually inside the cab.

If you keep the EFI...  ditch that beer barrel intake.   I just put an M1 on my 5.9 and fired it up yesterday.   Lot more fun with something that can breath up top.

i don't have a OD, at lest i don't think so the shifter read P R N D 2 1 (theres no circled around the D ).

if you are running a regular transmission (i.e. A904, A727), then you will need to reprogram your computer so that it does not recognize the transmission shifts.

If the trans came out of that truck it's got OD.

ya its still in the truck. and drives great just the body is toast  :rotz:

you have a couple of options about the trans. (46RE, electric valve body)

1- run it all stock and let the PCM deal with the shifting. there is an adapter that can work with the speedo. you can leave off the switch and let it switch by itself up and down. the switch DISABLES the OD gear. no switch and you will still get OD, wanted or not. i doubt you'll be doing any heavy towing anyways.

2- get a MANUAL trans PCM and put a 46RH (hydraulic) valve body in it. there is a simple setup to get the OD and Lock-Up to work using some switches and simple wiring to get them to work.

i suggest leaving the stock setup.

stingger68

when i do it I'm going to try stock first and if it becomes a bad thing the I'll go another way. i called a friend and he has a 82 Cordoba with the 318 so i got the part for the other way if need be. :2thumbs:
