i'm about to change my oil in my almost stock 440. i always used castrol 10-30 when doing an oil change on it. ive read the thread on alot of oils now don't have the right zinc mixture in and destroying cams and lifters. my questions are what's the best weight oil to use in a fairly stock 440 that gets driven in 30-100 degree weather? also ill be using castrol oil everyplace around here sells cheap no name oil and castrol is one of the better ones they carry. and second question is when using castrol how much ZDDP additive will i need to mix in? stock oil pan btw i ask because every brand oil has there own amount of zinc in and i don't want to add to much because i heard it can do as much damage as not running enough zinc.

i always use  castrol 20/50  or 15/40
with comp cams additive  :yesnod:

not trying to high jack anything  ,  CompCams  released their own oil now with the propper amounts of Zinc :scratchchin: was  just reading the ad in the latest mopar muscle magazine

buy valvoline VR1 10-40 and call it good.  it has the additive in it already.

ive read even valvoline vr1 racing oil has less then whats recommended for zinc. is this true? i already have acouple bottles of ZDDP so i mise well use them. anyone know how much additive to add when doing a oil change and using castrol oil?

RD

that is not true.  it works fine.  used it for years.  now if you are really paranoid, they do make a strictly race VR1 with a crapload of ZDDP in it, but it costs more.

One bottle of ZZDP+ with a fresh Castrol GTX oil change (5-6 quarts) is fine.  :2thumbs:

What I've been using for 3 years now. Cam still works.  :icon_smile_big:
This car was sold many years ago to somebody in Wisconsin. I now am retired and living in Florida.

Valvoline VR1 20W-50 Racing oil has a Zinc/Phosphorus content of 0.14/0.13.This should be the right range for our engines.

Al thanks for the link i'll stick with castrol. its available locally i'd have to order any oil like that. parts stores sell mostly no name brand cheap crap around here and my engine leaks oil so i'd constantly have to order this oil if i didn't want to mix n match oils. whats a good weight oil to go with? and does anyone know of a link that explains all the different weight of oils? and how to pick the best one for your application.

o'reillys carries it, so does autozone.  Valvoline is very comparable to castrol in many ways (better yet, valvoline is not owned by BP hehe, stirring the pot awaiting many to fight back against me teasing BP, they will), BUT... VR1 has the additive where castrol does not.  its actually cheaper to buy the VR1 instead of buying castrol and then buying an additive.

10-40 is a good weight, and mixmatching oils is not an issue between castrol and valvoline.. just an issue when you mix either one of those with pennzoil or quaker state as the use different types of detergents (if i am not mistaken, castrol and valvoline use a kerosene based detergent and pennzoil and quaker state use a paraffin style... i may or may not be correct on that).

I like 20/50 weight oil for our older cars which run  looser tolerances than the current internal combustion engines.

Just a small factiod:
I used Rotella T 15W-40 with a bottle of ZDDP to break in my engine.  I changed it out immediately with Mobil 1 10-40 and a bottle of ZDDP.  Drove the car for about 100 miles and busted through my timing chain cover.  After fixing that I drained out the Mobil one and ran the engine for about an hour with fresh rotella + ZDDP and changed it again with rotella and ZDDP (fresh filter each time as well).  I wanted to be sure I captured any metal particles that may have gotten into the system - also I was too cheap to use the Mobil one over again.

I know - who cares but when I was running the Mobil 1 my oil pressure at idle (~950 rpm) was around 30-35psi.  With the Rotella,  I am at 55 psi @ idle (with the engine all warmed up of course).  Both oils ran @ 75+psi when the engine rpm was over 1500rpm.

- I'd probably not go back to a 10-40 weight oil again.

I running the same oil, Rotella T 15-40 with GM additive, great oil pressure, no complaints so far.   :2thumbs:

Guys this has been discussed and beat up extensively over on the NCRS discussion board. In any case the net result was Rotella T 15w-40 with a CI or CJ-4 oil rating is what we need for our old flat tappet cams. Any oil that has this type of rating is good stuff including the Valvoline VR1 products.

Last I checked, the diesel oil's analysys was still too low as was the vr1, even bradd penn is suppose to be a little low. I stick with bradd penn and additive and sleep good at night.  I can't run 20w50 in my engine, idle cold is 60psi and any throttlepegs my 100 psi gauge. At op temp I run 85 down the road.    Changed the 20w50 out for 10w40 andi am 65 to 75 cold and op temp at cruise runs 60 with a 1200 rpm idle at 40

Challenger340

I've just been using the non Zinc newer Oils, and using a Bottle(2?) of $8 Zinc Additive, to bring it up to satisfactory Zinc content.
Seems cheaper to me ?
Than buying expensive per Quart, ALREADY added Zinc Oils ?

Only wimps wear Bowties !

Sixt8Chrgr

Whatever you use make sure the oil has the CI-4 or CJ-4 rating on the back of the bottle. If not put in the additive but cheaper just to buy the oil with the correct rating.

Google Duke Williams ZDDP Zinc...more than you want read on the subject.
