Hemi Superbird air cleaner

I've seen hemi birds with both fresh air bases (without front shield) and non fresh air (with shield). Which is correct or did they happen to get out both ways?

Not sure whether there was a factory error or not, but you should have the shield.  Only fresh air cars didn't have it.  The shield was to prevent hot air wash from the radiator fan.

As with MaMopar, anything's possible. But, as a norm, yes, any non-fresh-air Hemi in '70/'71 should have had a front shield..

Thanks all, thats what I thought but I have seen them without and just started to think maybe I'm wrong, especially when I've seen the N96 on the fender tag.

Remember, it's been decades since these cars were first built. Many have gone through numerous "restorations". Sometimes, people just got by not knowing the depth of mopar "correctness", even if they even cared for it back then.........

When I bought my HEMI 'Bird I noticed it did have the shield on the air cleaner.  I did alot of research checking unrestored original cars and they came BOTH ways. The one thing I noticed is the EARLY cars did not have them, the Later built cars did.
Another item I noticed was there is no Power steering cooler on my car. Again I checked alot of original unrestored cars an none of them have it.  Just my 2 cents!  Wingnut426

N96 Superbird fender tags  

Speaking of N96 on the fender tag, I've been told some have N96 and then XXX stamped over the top of if. Has anyone seen this or have pictures?

I dont recall seeing X out fender tags.Will look through my pictures to see. If I seen any like that

I found my car in 1982 - at that time a friend of mine had a book on Superbirds and it gave a part number and stated to go to the Dodge division as all Plymouth Hemis were fresh air cars (mine is coded as a N96 car)  The book said from a Challenger or Charger with out fresh air.  I went to my local Dodge dealer and ran the part number and it came back no good.  Rich was helping me at the dealership and said let's try running the part number before and after the number we have.  The part number after turned out to be the non fresh air base and the number after that was the lid.  Rich surmised that the original number was for the set and only used at the factory.  Talking to other owners I came to the conclusion that if they had the time and the stock of non fresh air cleaner kits they used them, but if there was not one right there they sent the car out the way it came from the factory with the fresh air base plate.  Not sure if I am 100% correct, but seams to work considering the rush they were in to make the cars ready.  YO, SBBob

Thanks all for the help. As my car came with none there is no way to know which was originally installed, so I think I'll put a non fresh air on as it sound like that was the intention (whether it got it or not).

Sounds like a great idea to me.  I ended up using the center section for the dual quads off of a fresh air base plate and got the belt guard off of a six pack base plate and mated the two as I could not find an original one at that time.  The Plymouth fresh air base plate are much more common than the non fresh air base plates.  Good luck.

Sad to have had it that long and never heard it run.  Would love to see more pictures and know the mileage.  Wow - know they are still out there.

Owner bought it back in the mid - late 90's .
If I remember right I think  he gave something like mid / upper  teens for it. It has a warrenty block , Hemi, 4 spd , Limelight black int , buckets , console 3.54 Dana .
It hadn't been run in several years when he bought it. So god only knows how long it's actually sat idle. I don't remember the mileage on it but it's not super low or anything,,, that I know.

If I remember right it came from the Toledo Ohio area.

Mine was in a similar condition in 1982.  Almost 100,000 miles (just short of 185,000 now) on it, wrecked in the right rear quarter panel and missing the original motor.  They had replaced the motor with a complete 67 out of a R/T rollover.  I spent much time looking for the right parts and found a 70 block at a garage sale in the late 80's.  Bit by bit it came together over 27 years.  Hope your friend can get it up and running someday.  It will be a very fantastic car when done.
