If that is a 1975 ad (which it appears to be), it must not be Don Hicks' car.   I thought Don still owned his Daytona at the time of the 1979 Car Collector magazine article.   I also thought he owned it for some time after that.

nascarxx29

Ed Mohler and Gary Haven Don Hicks owned XX29J9B405189.I do have the Oct 79 Car Collector mag around here. The other black daytona painted white was Radkes XX29J9B383276

"have over $8000 invest"

LMAO.  I wish you could still have a car like that for $8000
I'm smarter than I act, But I don't act smarter than I am.

Mopar John

In the ad above it states " new 426 HEMI " . Does that mean this Daytona no longer has it's original engine or was it just rebuilt during the restoration?

In 1975,  $8000 was all the money (and more) for that car.    It's all relative.

FJMG

Yup, in 1974 my parents purchased a brand new satelite 4-dr for $2400.00 (which we still have).

I agree to an extent. I do not think that its quite the normarmal rate of inflation though. You cant even buy enough parts to assemble a nose properly for that 8k any more.

Aero426

My point was more about coming up with $8k for a five year old used car at that time.   That was a ton of money.   It sure does seem cheap today with the way the priced jumped.   But once the car is priced out of your reach, it doesn't matter much whether it's $8k then, $80k in 1988 or 800k in 2006.

That is the Black/Red Stripe Daytona that now belongs to Steve Fox and was at the Nationals a few years ago. The original engine had been rebuilt, but not correctly!

gtx6970

I looked at this car when it was in Alabama many many years ago.

Paul, If I may ask, how was it determined what color the stripe was. As there was no fender tag and I didn't think he had the build sheet

WB General Lee

I passed many cars in the early 80's I could have bought and are now worth way more than times the normal inflation rate. One example was a 1970 Cuda Convertible Hemi triple red for 20k. Whats that worth today its one of one? Also a Petty Blue Superbird 440+6 4spd car for 7k. I did buy a Superbird lime green in 1982 for $3400.

I was lucky enough to get my hands on two original General Lees here is my most recent one.

Was this one used on the original tv show?

WB General Lee

This car and my other General Lee are from the Warner Brothers movie. They are both stunt cars built with heavy duty roll cage and stunt add ons like line lock and a second brake and metal welded underneath the car for jumps. I tried to post more pictures but its saying the attachment is to large.

I agree the car did not have a stripe on it in the early 80's. I have pics of the car from the mid 80's when my dad was going to buy it. He passed on the car because it had a repaint and there was no fender tag or broadcast sheet to verify anything on the car.

Danny, glad to see you back from the internet-less abyss!  Are things straightened out yet at your new digs?

I figured you'd chime in sooner or later on this topic, because of your dad's experience with the car prior to Steve picking it up.

OK, I'm being warned about resurecting an ancient thread, but it is probably my only claim to fame with an actual Hemi Daytona so hopefully people will be understanding.

I too went to Alabama and saw Don Hick's car, after watching the price go down month after month in Hemmings.  It was sitting in his house.  He knew I was driving a long way to see it, but I just gave him a call when I was a few minutes from his house.  I didn't want him to have several hours to get a barely running engine to fire that I'd never be able to start when it was cold.  I was pretty young back then, and of course Mr. Hicks must have figured I didn't know much (which was true).  So we're talking and talking about the car, he tells me about the cross country trip it made from out west, and I'm looking and waiting and waiting for him to say he'd start it up.  But he never did.  So I'm wondering why he wouldn't start the car, and figuring that there MUST be some problem.  And thinking that the paint was relatively mediocre.  And I remember the little Hemi emblems on the door, thinking that was so neat.  I also remember thinking this is the ultimate car ever manufactured.  EXCEPT that it didn't have a red interior.  We actually worked out a price, and he was going to take a '56 Chevy trade sight unseen based on my description.  Then he said that other people were coming to look at it, so I got cold feet.  And it didn't have a red interior, so I was hesitating.  So I was going to keep looking for a DIFFERENT Black/Red Interior Hemi Daytona.   :o  I remember backing the truck out of his driveway like it was yesterday.  I stopped about half-way down his driveway, which was a bit long.  They were all sitting outside as it was just getting dark.  I wondered what I should do, and they were all looking at me.  But it was too big for me and I was too afraid to spend such a massive amount of money when I had such limited knowledge.  I didn't learn until much later that he was some big-guy at Chrysler.  And also that it was possible to have a Black/Black Interior with a red stripe, which the Charger Restoration Guide said wasn't allowed so that also made me wonder about the authenticity of the car.  I stil wonder if the Charger book said it was legitimate and if I knew he worked at Chrysler if that would have made the difference.

nascarxx29

Thanks for reply .It was also in the 78 Car Collector magazine black with slott mags with no stripe .The car got restored by Jacobs .And belongs to Steve Fox.
But  XX29J9B405189 had other previous owners   The HEMI 3 plate also shows under Gary T Haven the car is XX29J9B405189 .Well known as Don Hicks car from Huntsville Al .If I recall correctly that car went to Steve Fox if Im correct .It should the same black car in the first link.

And to think, I could have bought this car (prior to restoration) in the early '80s for 10 grand.   :brickwall:

There was another Hemi Daytona, Blue, advertised in Hemmings long, long ago.  I called and called, and the phone rang and rang, but nobody ever answered.  To get an idea of how long ago that was, answering machines weren't everywhere.
