Being a Mopar guy, with a little Ford knowledge, I have a GM queston.  I know the Mopar 400 cu in motors were big blocks.  Were the GM 400s big blocks or small blocks?

I used to have a handle on life....but it broke off.

Considered a small block design....like the 350

The 400 Pontiac(entirely different than a Chevy) uses the same basic block as a 350 or 455 Pontiac. There really is no "small" or "big" block designation with those.

with chevy,a 400 is a small block, and the 396/402 are big blocks.pontiac uses the same basic size, other than the odd ball 301,and olds and buick used different blocks, all during the muscle car era.they switched to "corparate"engines in the mid 70s,where some buicks/olds/pontiacs would have chevy motors and vice vera, which is how some times people were confused,a 6.6 liter,as opposed to a 6.6 ta,in the same car were different engines!!!i dont know jack about fords though-andy

 :iagree:

I believe the Chevy 400's used the same block as the 350's only they had a larger bore and longer stroke.

There was a good article in car craft about a year ago where they took a small block and actually bored and stroked it out to 454 and compared it to a 454 big block. Pretty impressive numbers
