Fender Tags: What was the purpose of the silver metal strip? I cannot recall...

I cannot remember what it was for... Shims, to hang something on the line? Whatever it was, it got trimmed off at the end of the line.

think it was for inspectors to stamp or something  at various stages down the line

I think that all the options and features were on that metal strip and was snipped off during/after assembly.

No options on the metal strip, it was just a tag used to verify that inspections had taken place at the appropriate places during assembly just as tan top said.

So... How long was the strap when it began at the start of assembly?

What exactly was done? It was just trimmed as it went?

What is the whole story, please

What is the real story   

It was, as stated above, an inspection strip. The configuration of the strip differs by years and plants. Depending on the year, some plants used them some didn't.
