Does anyone know if a 440 HP engine  dated 7-18-68 would be right for a 69 Charger?
Should the code be HP for 375 HP motor or HP2?
If not what would be the cutoff  date for a 68 compared to one right for a 69?

Which date are you looking at? The casting date could be several months ahead of the assembly date (stamped on the pad in front). As Brian mentioned, there will be a 'D' or 'E' in front of the "440" stamped on the pad. 'D' would be meant for a 1968 model year car and 'E' would be for 69. There is no difference between HP and HP2. As for what's "correct", it depends on how "correct" you want it to be. Most people seem to think the assembly date should be within 30-45 days of the build date of the car (along with the corresponding model year designation).

Troy I read 60 days for a 440 HP2 on MMC Detroit....
http://www.mmcdetroit.com/Production_Date_Code/
There's 3 paragraphs of CYA at the beginning too. :P Gene has a car well outside of the ranges listed and so do I. I was going from memory from something I thought I read by GG.
