blowing out sprinklers

It's time of the year to blow out sprinklers. I was wondering if some of you guys do it yourselves instead of paying someone. I heard that regular air compressor can damage sprinkler system and usually doesn't have enough air volume.

I won't know until next spring if I did any damage. It's my first year doing it myself. I added in a fitting for a quick connect to the 1" copper line heading into the ground which feeds the system. I probably should have tried low pressure first    but instead just pushed high pressure air into the system. It blew them out with no problems. I have a 60 gallon compressor and it had no problems providing the needed volume.

Supposedly you want to use high volume low pressure. HVLP system, pretty much like spray guns

I've blown mine out myself for the past 6-7 years. I use 70-80 psi and run air through each of the four stations twice for five minutes each. You can damage the valves if your pressure is too high but it's near impossible to damage the pipes with a compressor. I'm sure there is some water left in my system each winter but not enough to do any damage because there's plenty of room for expansion when it freezes. Just keep the pressure below 100 and run them as dry as you can and there shouldn't be a problem.

I pay every year. 40 bucks for 8 zones. Its a lot but worth it to me.

I did mine yesterday with no issues and have done them for the last 4 years.  I have 11 zones and use 80PSI.  Work good as far as I know.

I don't understand? Sprinkler systems are for delivering water, not air.  The grass gets all the air it needs from the atmosphere.  You just cut down the lawn real low, rake it, put down your winter rye seed and fertilizer, and water.  In a few weeks, you're mowing again. 
  Oh, I get it now!  You must live where it gets cold enough that grass won't grow during the winter, and water remaining in the sprinkler system might freeze and crack the pipes.  That's not a problem here in Phoenix.  Our problem is, in the middle of summer, we just hope the water evaporates before it boils in the garden hose.
