My wife and I went to Bristol Tn to see Ron,(firefighter3931),,and cheer him on at PINKS ALL OUT.  One week ago,,,the "pig" did not have a motor in it,,,and he has been thrashing all week to make this event.  Also,,,he had over a 14 hour drive from Ottawa Ontario to Bristol Tn for the event.
New suspension , new fuel system, cooling system, new convertor, new motor, etc,,,,all had to be done before the car was ready.
He told me he finished everything 1-2 days before leaving home,,,and really didnt get a chance to test the car,,,,let alone run it down the track.
His car is awesome,,,,VERY clean,,,and well done, lots of attention to detail on this car.
Took some photos for everyone to see,,,,and hopefully he will chime in when he gets home tomorrow.....

Bristol was a great venue,,,really nice race track....

Rear shot of the car,,,,note new fuel sump on a "stock" tank,,,full exhaust,,,,he also plummed in some cut outs,,,next to the "X" pipe,,,very trick,,,,sounds awesome uncorked....

Driving around in the pits,,,,,,,,,

Taking off at the "tree"

"gremlin" issues,,,(he can go into more detail),,but the car kept blowing fuse's everytime,,,,and would knock out all the gauges,,,,,ended up being a bad reverse light,,,,,

MOTOR shot,,,,572..............

Ron and pic of my wife......she was telling him to adjust the flux capacitor...lol

Heading up to the tree for a run.............

My Wife and Ron's car..............

R2

Ron and Mark ( who runs a 69 Roadrunner turbo,,,9 sec ride )

Ron and the wife

Rons car and one of his biggest fans,,,,,Mopar hat, emblem, and Black Pig shirt,,,,Very cool..........

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

Thanks for posting the pics Doug and more importantly thanks for making the trip out.  :2thumbs: It's allways great to see you and Terri  :icon_smile_big:

It was a good experience but the drive home was looooong !! I loaded up sunday morning and hit the road at 10am and pulled into my driveway at 1:30 am. Total distance was just shy of 900 miles (one way)  :P

As Doug explained at the beginning of this thread we had some gremlins and growing pains to deal with. It was a mad thrash to just make it and unfortunately i didn't have time to test & tune the car before loading up. Sometimes the game of "life" just reaks havoc on all our fun so unfortunately the car had to take a back seat to more important things.

The good news is that i didn't break anything and managed to hunt down an electrical gremlin that made running the car properly near impossible. It sucks not having any guages/tach/shiftlight when you're trying to race.  :icon_smile_blackeye: The blown fuse problem seemed to be intermittent then became permenant so it had to be fixed ! At one point i had most of the dash harness pulled down looking for the problem.  :scope: It ended up being a grounding reverse light wire that is wired into the same circuit. Cut that wire and all seemed to work well afterwards.  :yesnod:

OK, onto the details :

(Run #1) This was the very first pass with the new 572 and torque converter so i didn't know what to expect. Decided to take it easy to make sure it launched straight and the brakes (new master cylinder) were working fine. It felt good and the brakes worked fine. That pass it went 12.50 @ 88 mph

(Run #2) i decided to run it hard and it launched well. The 60ft was in the 1.55 range and the pig was screaming.  Unfortunately i had a brain fart and let off the throttle at the 1000 ft mark and ran an 11.01 @ 117 but the 1/8 mile ET was at 7.02 which shows high 10's in the 1/4.

That was it for test & tune Friday....we only get two passes due to the sheer volume of cars.

Time trials saturday morning :

(Run #1) i do a crappy burnout and blow off the tires....it spun for 100ft and the 60ft dropped to 2.03 seconds.....horrible. The ET was 11.70 or so.

(Run #2) As I'm pulling up into the lanes my guages go dead again !  :flame: Decide to make a pass anyway and shift by ear. The engine breaks up as i'm accelerating so I abort the pass. Get back to the pits and Doug notices my distributor cap is half off...Geez...what else can go wrong !  :-\

This is when the mad electric thrash commenced and i started ripping into the harness testing individual circuits to isolate the problem. Definately had to get it fixed so i could see what the engine was doing and shift properly. It got fixed and i was ready for the first elimination.  :icon_smile_cool:

Arm drop pass : Pull into the box and do a big burnout....Rich has a huge grin on his face and gives me a thumbs up as i'm pulling forward. The Pig launches hard and is pulling like a rocket ! Shift into second and it screams up to redline and slam it into third....only i missed the shift and went into neutral ! Geez !!! Hear the rev limiter bouncing, look down and see what's happening....let off the throttle and pull it back into third and stomp it. Unfortunately that knocked me out of the running and put me on the trailer. It was just that kind of a weekend when everything was going wrong. I even managed to lock my keys inside the truck at one point.

Overall i would have to say it was an excellent experience despite the technical difficulties. Lots of positive comments from the other racers and one of the show hosts (Willie B) interviewed me on camera asking all about the car. It'll be interesting to see if that segment makes it past the cutting room floor. Willie is a super nice guy and has 13 mopars including 4 chargers.    Rich was also very personable with the racers and seemed very down to earth and genuinely cared....i'd have to give him two thumbs up as well.  :2thumbs:

Would i do it again ; Absolutely ! If i am lucky enough for another shot the car and driver will be better prepared. I'm going out this w/e for some test & tune to hopefully get that elusive 10 second time slip.

Thanks for reading

It should be a 10.50 car based on the power the 572 made but i still have lots of experimenting to do. It makes killer torque so i really have to heat up the Drag Radials or it just blows them off. I just brought the converter up to 2000 and launched so there's more experimenting to do. It might hit harder just launching off idle ? I'll find out soon enough !  :icon_smile_big:

Frank, we race at Napierville....about 30 miles south of Montreal, just north of the New York state border. Nice track with good prep.  :2thumbs:

As for making the field....they ended up picking a low 10 class so it's not likely i would have qualified anyway if that's any consolation.  :P

I might try and make a few OSCA races next season. My buddies who were also @ the Bristol Pinks.... race that series and want me to come down.  :scratchchin:

Thanks to all the members for their positive comments. :2thumbs: I wish i could have done better but that's just part of the game.  :P

Really nice going,  sir and have better run at things next time. The show "Pinks All Out" will be in Houston Oct 15th & 16th and my friend is going to go down there with  his 1969 Roadrunner just to get a few timeslips.  Hope he has more than just 2 runs , though.

Guess you never know what they end up with but his RR is a very low 11/high 10 second car thru the mufflers. Basically , it is a fast street car with some track time too. I will go to help him "pit crew" the RR but  will not have my Hemi Charger there , sadly.  Doubt it would make the cut anyway.

Gonna be interesting and congrats again on going 900 miles to run your Charger.  That took a lot of dedication just to get there!

richRTSE

Congrats Ron! That's one bad a$$ Charger! I know those weren't the times you were hoping for, but thats still plenty fast for a HEAVY street car...(I was kinda suprised to see the heater, power steering, battery in front)...get those bugs worked out and you'll be flying!!
