I can't believe I ruined my car by turning it into a GENNY LEE.    My car is worth crap now.  What a waste.    It used to be nice and worth something but now it's a big orange piece of POO !    It has no value nor does it get any thumbs up.........   What the hell was I thinking ?    Now I need to go and find a new car since my car is off to the scrap yard.

Make sure you send those hideous wheels and pushbar to the scrap yard also. Who would want them  :puke: .
I pointed to two old drunks sitting across the bar from us and told my friend
"That's us in 10 years".
He said "That's a mirror, dip-shit!

My68Charger

don't get me wrong, I loved DOH as a kid and I though it was cool that I had a charger just like the one in the show it just gets old after a bit. It wasn't until I was in my teens that I saw bullet and that changed how I look at chargers. I still love the GL to this day its right up there with the 80's firebird from Knight Rider but you don't walk up to everyone that has a firebird and ask them if they are going to turn it into KITT.

oh well no need to b&^% about it, we all love our chargers and I'm sure its all questions we have all been asked. Now if dodge would just make the new ones a 2 door  :icon_smile_wink:

I still think it was a waste to use such a nice car to make into a GL.....especially since it isn't even the right year.

See my post above....

They still looked like '69s. The one in question looks like a '68....

And on the show you were not suppose to notice the difference so a 69 is the correct way to go so.......???

So, a tv show uses '68 and '69 chargers and paints them the same etc etc etc the way they did in that show, and someone wants to make a '68 into a general lee and not make such drastic changes that make it harder to convert back to a normal '68 if he wants, and he is somehow "wrong" for not cutting out the side marker holes like they did in the show, or filling them in with bondo, or hand bailing wiring in a '69 grille, or cutting out the rear light panel and putting in'69 tail lights?

The reality is, making a '68 into a general lee, even if it is not an exact copy, is just as legitimate as what the tv show did.  Heck, what color did he use.  They used like 9 different oranges in the show, somtimes mixing them togeather! (sometimes heating the paint on a hot plate to make it stick better in the winter! It's a wonder they didn't burn the whole shop down!!)

I mean, it's not like dodge sold a general lee "package" from the factory, so you could make one any way you want, as long as you like it, who cares?

Strip away the useless, unimpressive internet Jenny Lee factoids I have to hear repeated word for word every time I meet a Dukes geek at a gas station, and you are saying that the show used 68's so it is "correct" to use a 68? The show modified them to 1969 appearance. Being of 1969 appearance is every bit as much a part of the identity of that car as the flag on the roof. If you can modify the appearance and make it a 68, then  it is okay to drop the flag, change the color, or why not just use a Nova?

"Star cars" will always be on the "Most hated" list with enthusiasts because of their popularity..I had I don't know how many buddies tell me NOT to paint my cobbled  up '70 Se 383 car into a GL...Well, I did in 2002 and have never looked back. One buddy inperticular told me that it was stupid and I should fix it back like a standard '69 Charger R/T clone...WTF? It's  a '70? So by HIS thinking, it's "ok" to clone a '69 R/T out of a 1970 Charger, but NOT "ok" to clone a GL?? I had some sweet payback when we went to our first show together after I finished up his B5 Blue/white tail stripe/ 440/4-speed Charger R/T clone, and I saw him leave about halfway through the show and wondered what the hell..So, I called him to find out...Low and behold, he got so pissed at my "Cobbled up GL" clone getting all the attention that he simply left. I catch this same sh*t with "Christine"...I can still hear 'em..."I can't believe you took a '58 Belvedere and painted it yet another red and white Plymouth..Don't you want to be different?"

The only car that I haven't seemed to catch any grief over yet is the "Kowalski special" I'm building out of a '72 Challenger, but I can bet it's coming...I don't like "Hemi people", but That's not gonna cause me to tell them to park away from me and my GL...You know the ones I'm referring to here, so before every Hemi guy/gal on here gets their panties in a bunch, lemme splain...These types are the ones that come to the car shows in their "Store bought" Hemi car and have the balls to say things like this when you ask ANYTHING abouth their car.."Well, 'yknow, it's Hemi so you know it's fast"...or my favorite "Well, this ones got the "Big boy" motor, so your 540 C.I. stroker wedge can't hold a candle to my 425 HP HEMI!"

Just because something is popular with everybody, doesn't make it stupid or wrong, it just means everybody is into it..Yeah, that '68 Charger painted correctly would only be painted that way cause the owner was concerned about the RESALE value..This way, IMO, he's a true enthusiast because he did the car the way HE wanted even IF it was a "Real" R/T...To say this guy was wrong for doing so, is no different IMO than walking up and running the VIN numbers on someones car at a show, then bitchin' about how he "Destroyed" a real R/T Charger to build a Daytona clone. It's arrogant, pompus, self rightious, and degrading...All of which have no place in this hobby when we are all supposed to be on the same team...For most, the DOH and the General Lee stand for what used to be good in America..Unlike the BS people and attitudes of today..Everybody's a critic..

If the show's prop-car builders had ever used Novas then I would say yes.  Most GL clones are really "prop replicas" of the on-set cars rather than copying the intended fictional car in the show.

And what was the fictional GL supposed to be like, anyway?  A 1970s dirt oval racer with license plates, a full interior, CB radio, and 14x7 Vectors?  The car was always a Hollywood stunt/prop car as much as it ever was a southern-fried racecar.

I don't want to put a damper on your dream or anything but why didn't you just find a '69 that was all done and just needing paint instead of the restored '68? I'm just kinda curious :shruggy:
in quebec 69 charger is extremely hard to find and the price are  too crazy.. compare to a 68...

a childhood dream to own a lee, and it is important in life.. realize childhood dream.....

yep beautifull before in picture, but many problem with the body when you start to work on the car... rust etc..... now the paint will be right!

To set the record straight, the car is a 383 2bbl - not a real R/T or Hemi.

And if they had the choice, they NEVER would have used 68's! They had to work with what was available, and that meant converting the 68's to 69 appearance. "Righting" the wrong cars.

Well, they DID use a LTD to fill in for a shot of the Jenny Lee in the first reunion movie. I guess LTD's are on the "Correct" list.

Yes, an old LTD with some orange paint on the roof would technically be one "correct" version of the GL as seen in the 1997 reunion special.

Show up with one at a car show if you want.  Park it between two other nice GL replicas.  Display the LTD proudly with a signboard explaining the backstory.  It wouldn't bother me any.  I would wish you well if I was there.  (Hell, I would probably be backing up your LTD/GL story to bystanders when I overhear them saying you're making it up.)

:horse: :horse: :horse:  I mean....really people....either ya like it...or ya don't...who really cares anymore???   Most of us has buried this beaten horse a long time ago.  If it means this much....perhaps the administrators can create a "General Lee"  discussion board by itself?    Nah.....that would be a waste of time, not to mention an area where people can engage in heated arguments of the correct or incorrect characteristics of the GL, and end up getting locked or deleted anyway.   Lots of us DO have GLs in this forum, and quite frankly......we couldn't possibly care less what others think about it.    It's STILL a Charger!!!  And the last time I looked....this IS  DodgeCharger.com!!!
Sorry if anyone is offended over this post....but really......lets move on!!

It's all good we're all going to disagree on a whole bunch of things all the time but I really can't see a separate GL forum existing just for the people who like it being better.  There are already GL sites devoted to it.  Just my opinion though.

Mike DC

The standard net forum disclaimer applies.  If you don't wanna read & talk about it then just don't follow these threads.  And of course there are other GL-devoted sites.  It makes sense that this site would be open to discussing the subject but not spend too much bandwidth on it.

For what it's worth, I decided a long time ago that I would not normally start up new GL threads here.  I figure the board will hear all the GL talk it wants out of me if I just respond on other people's threads.

G-man

I know why I would.

My car is that blue, and has the white roof and looks absolutelly beautiful. I still want to sand blast the whole car down and paint it orange. Why? Because I love orange. Why did I not just buy an orange charger then? Because the blue one was an excellent price for the excellent condition. This way, rather than having a project car I can do nothing with thats getting painted orange I can keep driving this beautiful car till I got the money to make it orange. So really its a cost thing and useability. Id rather have a car thats driveable and in excellent shape and change colour than buy an already orange car thats bad shape that will sit there for 5-10 years before I can do anything with it. This way you have fun before changing the colour and then continue having fun...

I wouldnt make a GL though... (well sort of... orange with 01 but no flag and will have my own custom wheels)... I just like the brightness of orange and the number is nice for a pro-touring build. Id just rather work on a good car than a project car. True, I can find a good orange car but it also would get sand blasted so I can put the custom orange I want on it, so whether it was blue or orange it would still go through the same process, so buy whats good and a good price is why i got blue to start with since end result will be the same. Whether that answers anything I dont know... i just know why I would. :shruggy:
