hey! Im reading all this and im getting upset.... My charger was in real nice shape before I "destroyed" it too!

You don't deserve to own a Charger....how could you.....you have destroyed a perfectly good car
Make it idiot proof, and somebody will make a better idiot!

It's a case of the "look at me factor". Some guys just need attention by painting their cars like GL's, cutting holes in the hood for a supercharger, painting "hemi" badges on the car, etc. Those who just want to enjoy their car and don't give a $hit what anyone thinks are the guys that I respect. Their cars are cooler too.

Im painting mine like a General not for the attention but because its one of my dream cars. getting compliments is nice but for those that dont like Generals Im not worried about what you think like I said before this is a Charger site we should all respect the love we have for these cars.

NHCharger

I'm not sure if it's the look at me factor. If it's a life dream to own a GL I don't see the problem. I've been thinking about a Bullitt clone for quite a while now since I consider it a badass car. Does that make me an attention whore?

So sell your Charger, buy a Coronet or Satellite, and pocket the money.  Or is it worth $10,000 extra to you because your car wears the Charger outer skin?

I had a GL replica 15 years ago.  It wasn't cool again yet.  No internet, no cable TV reruns, no Dukesfests, no DVDs or VCR tapes of the show being sold.  Just a few fans passing around raggedy taped-off-TV copies of the episodes and an occasional newsletter.

I will still have a GL long after it stops being cool again.

"Strip away the useless, unimpressive internet Jenny Lee factoids I have to hear repeated word for word every time I meet a Dukes geek at a gas station"

Gee, "hate" much?

I was 9 when the show originally aired.  Thus, strip away your ignorance to the fact that some people know things without looking them up on google, and what you've got is a true fan of the the tv show.

My father was a WWII veteran.  He and my mom had 7 kids, then 9 years later, I slipped through.   So, my dad was 41 when I was born.  As you can imagine, he and I didn't have much in common.  Just about the only tv show he and I both watched when I was growing up, was the dukes of Hazzard.  I didn't even know what a dodge charger was until I sawthat show, but I knew then that I wanted one.  So, after owning my '69 charger for about 3 years, in 2007, my dad died at age 80.  I decided to do my car as a general lee in tribute to my dad, to include the words "dedicated to dad" airbrushed on the quarter panels.  I started stripping my car down in late 2008 and dropped it at the body shop in early 2009.  Unfortunately that is where my plans started goign a different direction than I wanted.  Long story short, $24,000.00 in bodywork and paint later, and I have decided that, at least for now, my car will just be an orange R/T clone.

Moral of the story, there's no need to bash people just becaue you disagree with them, if you don't knwo what your talking about, you shouldn't talk,  and not everyone does a general lee "to get attention".

And to be honest I really wanted to own a general lee from childhood on, owning a '69 charer was one of my lifelong goals.   But when I finally got a charger, I had decided to paint it blue with a white R/T stripe.....until dad died.

P.S.: I read several magazine and news articles about the general lee, back before the internet existed.......

General_01

This discussion is always the same. Some people don't like the "clown car". Some people think the car is "ruined" because you painted it like the General and others think you are just "General Lee" fan, not a Charger fan if you build one. Same old thing. It just boils down to "different strokes for different folks". If you have a GL, you better be prepared for the anti GL crowd, because they are loud and proud. Ignore it and move on. Nobody likes every car or mod out there.

I will also say that, even though my screen name is General_01 and I did own a GL replica, I was against Nelson using this car for a few reasons:

1- It was a '68.
2- It was in pretty good shape with a nice color combo.

In my opinion, if you are going to do a GL, you should use a '69 or make a '68 into a '69. I am not saying there aren't nice '68 GL's out there, but if you are going to get a a car and start from scratch, you might as well get the right year. If you have owned a '68 for quite some time and decided to GL it, I would understand that. You already had the car and later decided to do a GL. Another reason might be low availability of 69's where you are. Nelson bought this car INTENDING to make a GL. He then put a ton of money into it to make it as close to Lee1 as possible. Why do that if it is already the wrong year? The whole thing was just kind of absurd to me. Don't get me wrong. The work on the car was excellent and the paint and graphics turned out great, but for what? A wrong year GL. Then he turns around and sells it because he was tired of people telling him it was the wrong year car.  :shruggy:

Just my  :Twocents:. You can flush it down the toilet with all the other opinions on this thread because non of them made a difference. The car is still a wrong year GL replica. :icon_smile_big:

"Long story short, $24,000.00 in bodywork and paint later, and I have decided that, at least for now, my car will just be an orange R/T clone."

Can't believe this Thread is still going..so I'll add more..... :nana:

I am in the same place....just a few $1k's less (in the paint) and with everything new going back on the car I struggle with making it an R/T clone.  I even bought a black R/T stripe from a member for when I decide to go that route.  All I have to do is add the stripe and change the wheels (Magnum 500's in 18"  :drool5:)....BUT for now I am getting the YEE-HAA out of my system.  As most GL enthusiasts, I grew up watching the DOH on Friday nights as a kid thinking that orange Charger was the badest muscle car on earth....what other car can jump a river and not get a scratch   :2thumbs:(remember I said I was a kid then).    Obviously, an impossible task for any car. So, I have to start out with the GL "stickers".  They peal off in minutes.  SO HAVE YOUR FUN, HIT THE HORN, AND SMOKE THE TIRES.... THEN YOU CAN GET SERIOUS and put the R/T stripe on.

I am just glad I finally got a Charger.  Whatever the color or options it's the badest looking muscle car (well the 69 Camaro is close).  They're not making anymore 2nd Gen Charger so GL lover or not "we all just need to get along".   :icon_smile_big:

BYW...I suspect the GL haters are the old school guys that drove these cars in high school when new or when the car was only a few years old.  Not the younger crowd (30 - 40 now) who were kids then (or not born at all).  If I put myself in their shoes, I'd probably think the same way....I am thinking of "Fast & Furious" tuners....I am sure there are a few young kids today  running around thinking that hitting the NOS is like Hyperspace, all cars should have neon lights underneath and a Mitsubishi eclipse can out run a 1970 Hemi Challenger.  I just shake my head when I see those rides at shows...Just not my thing (but I keep that to myself) :2thumbs:

BTW,I appreciate those "experienced" members...I would have only had pictures to go from to support my restoration effort.  Some of you have been very helpful so far....Thanks

well, not all the old farts hate the gl :2thumbs: i drove a 68 to highschool. looked alot like this one did at the start. my first car, and i couldnt see myself driving anything else. graduated in 74 and thought the world revolved around that car. i watched DOH. every episode. even got the complete collection on dvd. i own all the movies that have the charger in them. plan on cutting out all the good parts and make 1 decent charger movie out of the lot. :smilielol: i think personally that i can paint my car anyway i want and when they pry my dead hands off the steeringwheel the next person can do what they want with it. no matter what we say, there will always be someone that disagrees. but no matter how much we differ in here, there are alot of people out there that actually think there were better cars than the awsome mopar. :shruggy: yep i know ya think im kidding, but its true. :rotz: they even have sites simular to this one. (so ive heard, but never been there myself). and i do emphisize simular, CUZ THEY DONT HAVE THE CHARGER!!!!!!!!!! so keep on disagreeing cuz its fun to read and keeps our blood flowing all the way to the next car show where we can drool all over each others cars again.

The thing I hate is everyone that sees my 68, the first thing out of their mouth is "are you going to paint it orange and turn it into the General Lee?"  :brickwall:  :RantExplode:
the same reason you wouldn't own a delorean (where's the flux capacitor?)
or a black 82 firebird

The question remains: is a black 68 Charger really any different than the Delorean or Firebird clones, or any GL?

A black 68 Charger could be just that, a black 68 Charger.  The General Lee is so obviously a GL that no one will mistake it.  The Firebird you are thinking of is also pretty subtle and I have only seen about two Back To The Future clones so they don't seem too overdone I suppose? :shruggy:
The GL is right in your face so I guess that inspires a certain amount of love it or hate emotion.  I'm only guessing though.
