The Cougar was, in many ways, a mirror of the Mustang up through 1973. Yet, mysteriously absent from those early years was the BOSS 429 engine option, which could be ordered on the Mustang during the '69 and '70 model runs. Actually, not quite. Ford did commission just two 1969 Mercury Cougars with the semi-hemispherical BOSS 429 engine built, and sold both of them for $1 a piece to two famous drag racers. Designated by Mercury as "clinic cars," the two BOSS 429 Cougars toured through dealerships teaching Ford gearheads all about horsepower.

the cougars were heavier then the mustangs so they wouldn't have been as competitive, they suffered from being heavier then their competition like the chally was heavier then the Cuda and fire bird was heavier then the camaro.
I was alway enamored of the Dan Gurney Special 427 Cougar XR-7 since one was across the street from my school when i was 12 and 13.

I once read that they actually made 2 street Boss 429 Cougar Eliminator's that were a protype to be made in production cars like the Mustang's. But be cause the Boss 429 Mustang's weren't selling fast enough, the project got scratched. I guess 1 of the Boss 429 Cougars got crushed, and the other was sold to a Ford employee at the time to use as a daily driver. And I guess that car has just gone away without no one knowing where it went other then the Ford employee sold it off to someone when he wanted another car. So, somewhere out there, there is a 1 of 2 Boss 429 Couger Eliminator sitting waiting to be re-descovered by someone. There were photos of the cars, and they were mean looking.
