driveway...

I found this today, a 68 Charger R/T, 440, auto.  Needs quarters, trunk floor, some other stuff out back.  Non-matching engine (383 now).  He said it was a Mr. Norms car, but can't verify it.  Has build sheet though and vin.

There was also a 82 Imperial Frank Sinatra edition.

is he still asking $12000 for the charger?

I have no idea?  I just found the car.  Was it for sale before?

bull

Odd how perfect the dash looks amid all the chaos. :icon_smile_question: And I thought I was doing some things backward.

Brock Lee

It looks like it may have had a quick skimming of bondo and respray "resto" not too far back in its past. Note the filler breaking away under that stripe and how nice the paint around it is,

nice charger once restored !! looks like  PP1 :scratchchin:   has cruse control , & 3 speaker dash :popcrn:

It is worth restoring, R/T, 440 (originally), power windows, cruise, a/c, am 8-track.  I'll go back today and see what the guy thinks.

komninon

it was for sale a couple months ago for 12000
i made an offer, and never called me back.

Hey Komninon, your inbox is full.

I had no idea the car was for sale before.  Was it for sale on here?  He was asking $12,000?!?!?  the car is barely worth 1200 in the condition it is in.

nh_mopar_fan

That Imperial is a collectors item if it still has the Sinatra's Greatest Hits 8-track that came with it.

Looks like JJ1 - "medium gold metallic" - mudded up & painted "re-sale red".  Did you get a fender tag pic?

charger_fan_4ever

probably worth 5k to some of us east coast guys if the frame rails and unibody are solid. As i recentlly learned a buildsheet is a must have for 68 and down to verify body #'s vs tag vs vin.

TheAutoArchaeologist

A few more pictures of the cars and a BUILD SHEET....

Found out it has been sitting since 1988.

Sorry for bringing this thread back from the dead, but I needed some opinions.

The kid who owns this dropped me a line the other day, wanting $9,000 for the Charger.  I think it is worth maybe 2-3,000 in just parts.  What do you think?

bull

I'd take $9k for it but it's worth about $6k, maybe. IIRC he does not have the original engine, right?

TheAutoArchaeologist

Yeah, not original engine.  Needs a complete back half of another car to restore this one.

Blakcharger440

It does look like the car may have had the whole rear clip replaced. I wonder if the build tag says it was green or red? The dash and build tag could have been taken off of a green car.

If you look more close, in the two of the photos, you will see that even part of the rear floor is also green not just the package tray.

nvrbdn

right you are jim, the floor and rear panel frames are all green as if a car was cut straight in half and welded together :2thumbs: check the drip rail from rear against the radiator core #'s.

Yes, as was said earlier in the thread, the car looks to have been back halved.

Do you guys think the car is savable?  68 R/T, original 440, auto on the floor, a/c, am 8-track, cruise, power disk brakes, etc...

nvrbdn

yes it is savable. everything is there. you wont have to look for parts, just alot of body work.patch panels and front floor, trunk pan. nice project.

$9k is too much.   I've seen some better restoration candidates for $7 - $8k.  I would point out everything wrong with this car, and offer no more than $5 - $6k.  Just my  :Twocents: :Twocents:.......

Okay, after taking another look at the photos. Here is what I can spot and tell so far.

1) The rear floor is green just like the rear package tray area is.
2) I look at the rust that was also on the red area and also the green area.
3) I look at the tar that is also on the floor parts and the rust on top of that as well.
4) The driver quarter post door jam area. (looks green)
5) The front driver front upper door jam area. (looks green)

But now what really came to my attention was one thing, a small part really. Look at the area at the shield that the wiring runs under. Even the shield is green and not red and it looks like it runs up the side as well.

Now I looked at the rear and the trunk photos and they are red just like the whole car is.

But if you look in the one photo where it's looking into the back seat area from the driver side door and you can clearly see just a small part of the rear quarter panel area or door jam top piece. Take a look at that small area, it's also has what looks to be green that had red paint on it.

Now look at the photos of the front door jams standing back at the rear quarter panel area. You will see areas on the door jam where the red paint as also came off. Now it looks to me like it might be green paint under that red paint there in that area as well.

Alrighty, I'll try to push him down a few grand.  I think a fair offer is like $4,000.  And I know I can't get it, I have no room.  See if anyone else is interested.

Ya know Ryan, if you had more room, like a barn somewhere, you'd turn into these guys that you come across all the time with a hundred cars packed away!  maybe its a good thing your space is limited.   :icon_smile_big:

My 70 RT is getting crarved down to the frame rails. Changed the upper/lower cowl, front inner fenders, door hinge pillars, full front floor, footwells and a patch on the rear seat pan. Have the following amd parts to go on 1 full rocker, both full 1/4's, outter wheel houses, roof skin, drip rails, trunk floor and brace, rear tail panel and lower valance, dutchmen panel and plenum under it. Bought a rust free door and fender. The hood and passengers fender were good. The original doors i could have bought skins. I might skin 1 original door, but price wise be better off with a rust free door shell.

All this to say i have roughly 9k in metal alone almost double what i paid for the car. I didn't have 15K at the time to buy a rust free project car, so it let me buy parts when i could.

I'm skeptic at buying a restored car. The resto would have to be very well document for me to buy a restored car. Lots of drivers i saw had poor repair work done and litterally needed the same amount of work as my project car, been more work actually stripping it down. In the end i know i'll have a rust free car with factory seams, so no worries about bondo bubbling out down the road and doing resto #2 $$$$.

For the car in question plan on 10k in metal alone,~4K interior, then the work to install the panels. Wiring, chrome the list goes on and on.$5k car will cost easily $25k done if you do most of the work yourself. Cheaper initially with 2 years of patching and 5 gallons of bondo. The second resto when it boils out will be the stickler.

TheAutoArchaeologist

Yeah, I told the kid I passed on it.  So he threw it up on ebay.

komninon

i saw the car 8 months ago. Steve [the kid] told me on the phone the car needs only quarter panels. was asking $12000. i went to see the car and. :o.....i left.
i did not make an offer.    maybe $3000?
