forget exactily , but the one with two holes is  is for an early 60s trans with front &rear pump suction , or something along them lines  ,

What about the size must be the wrong filter.

Right filter, wrong application. The larger filter is 66 and later,no rear pump. You can add the second hole and use it in the earlier transmissiom and have the best of both..

How can you know for sure by looking at the valve body.  Or should you just put another hole in it to be safe?

If the transmission is shifted by an external lever you don't need the 2-hole filter, only the cable-operated trans has a rear pump and needs the second hole.

The larger single hole filter pictured is actually '73 and later, the '66-'72 single-hole filter is the same size as the 2-hole. They modified the pan in '73 to make room for the larger filter.

FWIW, if you ever need a 2-hole filter and only have a single-hole filter, the metal frame inside most modern filters still has the second hole; all you have to do is locate it by pressing with your fingertip and then trim the Dacron material away with an Exacto-knife to expose the second hole.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Thanks for the help guys, upon closer inspection theres no hole in the valve body for the second hole. I did find abit of crap in the trans pan as per pic below, its not bits of metal but bits of something :shruggy: What are the little bits? and is it bad?
 Phil

either pieces of band material or clutch material.  most likely from your intermediate band.
