Maxwell Replica Amusement Park car...what's it worth?

My brotherinlaw passed away a few years ago but somewhere along the way he had obtained this replica of what I believe to be an early 1900's Maxwell (precursor to Chrysler?)  It was definately part of an amusement park ride as I remember them from being a kid and I just went on a ride with the exact same cars at Martins Fantasy Island near Niagra Falls NY.  My Dad has it now.

It steers better to the left than to the right by design as it was part of a ride where you control the gas and steer, but are guided by a center rail so you can't veer off course.  it has the same type of braking as a Golf Cart.  It's actually really cool. My parents currently use it to get around the campsite where all of the other campers use lame golf carts.  I told them to keep it because it has character but my dad wants to sell and get something else.  It has no reverse and it's not as quiet as a cart.

It has an 8hp 1 cylinder cast iron Kohler engine and it runs mint, It's chain driven from the motor but has a real rear differential. electric start and manual choke.   It is governed to @7mph but will take hills with 6-7 people in it.  If you tie a string to the governor it will do about 30.  I personally wouldn't do 30 in this thing...it's old. probably from the 50's.

Anyway, I'm going to ebay it but I like to list things with lots of info and I'm not 100% sure what it really is.  It's in pretty good shape and has always been at least covered if not garaged for as long as my family has had it.  no rips on the seats.  If you scuffed it and shot it quick, it would be more than presentable for parades and stuff.  I'd paint it red and hang some ladders on it and make it a mini fire engine!!  Little kids can drive it easy and I think it's pretty simple to alter the stock steering arrangement to steer equally both ways.

Anyone know anything about these?

Don't know anything about...but it does look pretty cool, esp. if it still runs. Just curious...why not keep it yourself?

That is very cool. They have a ride with those cars at Cedar Point.  I have seen old amusement park rides on E-Bay.  There is, or was a market for stuff like that, at least until the economy took a sh!t.  There is a few amusement park forums, and one specifically about Cedar Point.  Might be a good place to start.  I would keep her myself too if you are able to.

seeing the car reminded me of the turnpike ride at dutch wonderland in PA. Similar set up. I think they had 2 seaters and 4 seater cars.

I live in suburbia so really no place to drive it.  My parents have the perfect setup for it.  little dirt roads and you can get a load on and make it home at a blistering 7mph.

If you lived closer, or would consider delivering it to ON, I'd buy that in a minute.  Mind you I wouldn't spend more than $300.00.  It may be worth a lot more, I have no idea, but that's what I'd pay for it.

I'd buy it for my two young girls (6 & 4) to putt around my In-Laws farm on.  They have laneways that run parallel to the fields and snake through the bush and it would be perfect for them to learn how to control and respect a vehicle at such a young age.

I know they'd load the back seat up with their stuffed animals and dolls, ask their Mother to pack a picnic lunch, and they'd head out on adventures on their Papa's farm.

Good luck on the sale - let us know what it brings!

Wait a minute. How do you get 6-7 people in that thing?

71charger_fan

Probably got more for that than a real Maxwell is worth.
