harmonic balancer ?

My first question was quickly resolved today thanks to the knowlege on this forum so hopefully this will be my last one for a bit.  I just pulled my balancer off last night and noticed a good amount of build up behind it.  My Cheby neighbor told me it had a leak.  Can I just use one of these harmonic balancer repair sleeves or do I need a new balancer all together?  It would be much cheaper.

You only need the repair sleeve if the balancer hub has a worn groove from the seal lip. If the leak is just caused by a worn seal and the hub has no groove just replace the seal.

There aren't any major worn groves that I can see, but if I run my fingernail across the hub I can feel some small ones.  Is that enough to have to replace it?

Don't listen to a Chevy guy regarding oil leaks. Those small block leak like sieves.Clean it up put it together. It won't leak like a 350!

Get some fine crank polishing paper from the local auto parts (1000 grit or so) and give the seal surface a twice-over and you'll be fine with just a new seal.

Use a little gasket sealer between the seal OD and the cover hole. You can have seepage there which is highly annoying after a cleanup and re-seal and reassembly.
