As some of you know, I live in Surrey and it's not the greatest place. My Charger is locked up in the garage and my Duster and my dad's Mustang are in the backyard (the paved part) and under the garage's carport. The only way out of the yard is a locked gate beside my bedroom window. Anyways, a few months ago I was talking to a guy via email who has a '70 Charger he is restoring. He only lives 2 or so blocks from me. I only sent him a few emails giving him some pointers to where to get parts for his resto (he asked) and that I was moving into his area and I had a Charger too. Out of the blue today he emailed me asking if I had moved yet. Now, I'd love to go see his Charger but I'm sure he'll want to see mine too. When I lived on the Island I had no problems showing people my Charger and Duster....however, I talked to them a fair bit first. Only a few people came though, one being a member of FABO and we've become good friends since. However, that was the Island....not Surrey. I'm not sure exactly what my point is but my question is, if you lived in not the greatest area, would you trust a random stranger to come look at your cars? I'm thinking I should see if he lets me go see his car first or what.....maybe I'm just being paranoid :scratchchin: :shruggy:

The only possible answers to this question are either yes or no.

Why don't you ask yourself the question?  I am sure you will come up with the correct answer.

I invite anybody to see my car. I meet people for the first time and invite them over my house. I would with no issues with what you are asking.
Not to sound crazy but as long as my car is insured. I don't worry about such things. A while back we went on vacaction. I told a close friend my car is insured for 47,000.00 and I'm going away for 2 weeks. If when I come back it's not there I'll give you 500.00. It was there when I got home.  :brickwall:
I love my car but the market has dropped. It's insured for much more than I could ever sell it.

Isn't he taking the same risk?

assuming he's honest and really does have a charger................
go and see his, if he wants to see yours first just tell him its still in storage and you haven't moved it yet
when you say its not "the greatest place" i take it the crime is bad, besides the fact that it can't be "the greatest place", since its not Missouri!!!!!!!!!!!! :nana:

Follow your gut instinct.  If your asking this questions you already have reservations :Twocents:  I my self am way to trusting.  Infact, after a guy who had inquired about my cars, that I had follow me home to see others, had left, my wife asked if I remembered to tell him I always leave the keys in the ignition so I don't lose them and what times I am usually not home :smilielol:

one thing i did to help me sleep at night was get a motion detector like they have for driveways and hang in the garage above the back door. the alarm goes in the bedroom. it works great and reminds me when i forget to get the cat out of the garage before i go to bed!!!!

Yeah not the greatest place. Surrey was one crime theft capital of BC at one point.

Like others have said Cody go look at his car first and see if you form even a slight bond to the guy. Trust your gut instincts.

Tell the guy you sold all your cars so you could finish restoring a pink Mazda Miata in time for the pride parade next spring, it might get him to stop asking to come over.   :Twocents:

Put up a few signs on the windows and front yard etc. "Protected By Brinks" or something of that nature. Stick a few reflectors on the garage door with a couple of those closure sensors pointed at them. I have seen some guys even hook them to a siren that will go off if the beam is broken.  (Radio Shack Stuff)

Sometimes a deterant keeps an honest guy honest... And, makes a dishonest guy think twice.

mikepmcs

I have all that stuff mentioned, or do I??
I also sleep with a loaded SKS and 10 strip clips ready to go at all times. I'm elevated so i have a definite advantage as well.  Wait, what were we talking about...
Talk to the guy a little bit more and feel him out a little bit.
Start saving for that insurance too and get those bad boys covered.
Maybe your dad could get a collector policy from Hagerty or Modern or something in case your being a young man has an effect on pricing.  It's worth a call to them to see what the cost is anyway for full coverage.
Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

Ghoste

Has he ever asked to see your car?  Or has he just invited you to come and see his?  Because I read the question as you got invited to his place but you're afraid to reciprocate.

mikepmcs

Remember, just cause you are paranoid doesn't mean that they aren't out to get you.

trust but verify.

Get them insured like a few here have said and don't worry about it. Life is to short. Besides if he likes mopars he can't be all bad. :Twocents:

Nope, he never invited me over. I do have storage insurance on the Charger so if anything happens (fire, theft etc), I'm good to go.

My garage is secure but I still tend to be cautious, I no longer show my cars to someone I don't know. When I first moved to my current location I had a neighbor that would bring people over to see my cars in an attempt to impress them. I had to put a stop to that.
Like some others have suggested, follow your gut. If you do invite him over to see your Charger, watch what he takes in with his eyes, you should be able to tell if he's there to case the joint or just wants to see your car and visit with you.
Good luck.

Id suggest you meet at a local show, that way he brings his car, you bring your duster, you both get to talk without giving out addresses first.
If it he doesn't bring his but meets you there and he doesn't seem shady then suggest you go check out his project right then. :Twocents:

Well he's Canandian too so the worst that can happen is you guys will get into a squirt gun fight. :D

I don't think I'd worry about it too much. It's kind of like worrying about death; it's going to come when it comes. You really can't control a whole lot in life so make the best of it, try to make the wisest decisions you can at the time with the information you have and go with the flow. I work on my Charger all the time with the garage door open and people drive by gawking all the time. There's probably 10 scumbuckets right now who know I have a Charger in may garage but what am I going to do? Hire an armed guard to stand watch? Let it go, man. Insure it to the max and HOPE it gets stolen. Then you can just buy one that's done.
