I FINALLY started my 69 Twin TurboCharger project.

Hi guys, I've been here before but this time it is for real. I've gave up my turbo 10 second truck dream (it only ran 11's) and have rekindled my charger project. It started with getting the car out of storage and getting it home....

The car is a A/C, Drum brake, "H" 383, car with almost no rust. The bad part is almost every panel has some kind of damage. I bought the car when I was 14 with help from my parents. I have slowly gathering parts ever sense. The owner I bought the car from done a lot of stupid things to the poor car, like cut the floor and torsion bar cross member to install a floor shifter, install lights in the wheel wells, jump the car enough to shove the shocks threw the truck floor... :brickwall:

Anyhow, I've started gutting the engine bay in preparation for my plans of a retro style remodel with a fuel injected twin turbo 440.

Well that is all for now, just wanted to reintroduce myself. Please let me know what you think of my plans or any tips.

I have only heard of twin turbos  on a diesel. Do they make add on turbo (kits) for your application or do you have make your own?

No turbo kits that I know of. There are a few turbo b bodys that I can find on-line. The only way I wont go threw with the twin build is if I have to cut the car up too much. I'm not going to hack up a charger, even if it is not a rare one.

I build the second turbo kit for my truck so I have an idea of the work required. I actually already started gathering turbo parts for the charger.....

Here are a couple pictures of the truck. T6 S475 with a 5 inch down pipe.

Well a little update. With a LOT of help from Richard at West Coast Cylinder Heads (http://www.proheads.com/) I got this Edelbrock Pro Flow intake and fuel rails. I'll also be buying my heads, cam and roller lifters form Richard.

I also got the 440 from a friend, it is a 74 out of a motor home. I'm glad it is nothing special so it wont bother me when it shoves a rod threw the block.

Here is the beautiful intake on the engine.

Cleaned it up and painted it, (not sure if it will stay black) and got it in the engine bay for mock up.

I have a small dilemma with the down pipe fitting on the drivers side with the brake booster. I think I will opt for a hydro-boost unit and a type II saginaw pump.

Obviously this build is not going to be anything that a hard core charge guy is going to like. BUT, please know I have no plans on doing anything that is not irreversible......

Thought, comments, smart remarks?

Well, it was going to be a GL when I first bought it. I have the Dixie horns, and a dash panel signed by John Schneider "BO". But after seeing a few restored non GL chargers, I wanted to do the same, but the need for big power 800+ is make a few small changes in the plans....

you may want to try a BB truck power brake booster to gain clearance.  they are smaller in diameter, and if I am not mistaken, bolt up the same.

OR

they make brake master cylinder/booster relocation kits as found on darts so that hemi's could fit.

I'll have to check into that before I go dump the money on the hydro set-up

I'll look him up, I haven't been able to find many twin turbo kits that didn't cut huge holes in the fender-wells....

Thanks for all the ideas guys..

That will take some time to get spinning does'nt it? But when it' at full pressure I hav e feeling you probaby end up in the back seat if you dont hold on tight to the steering wheel

NOS is nice, turbo's are neat, but when it comes to Mopars, there's no need to cheat...

Wilde Racing

Thanks guys, I got some more stuff for the project..

two 38mm Tial gates and a 50 mm "Q" blow off valve.

I also started on the floor repairs, sub-frame connectors, and brake booster mod..

I had two panels to repair in the floor. I also had to repair the cross-member. I'm not much of a body man, which is pretty obvious if you notice the gap in the replacement panel, but I'm trying to learn.

I did a bunch of searching for sub-frame connectors, but didn't find I type I liked. The style that formed to the bottom floor pan looked nice when installed but I was a little worried about their strength, at one point they are only 2 or so inches thick, so I opted to loose a little ground clearance to gain in strength.

Cut but still need a few clearance mods...

The brake booster/down-pipe issue is hopefully solved with this new beautiful piece of equipment. It is out of a 05 Silverado Duramax, I'll have to do some modifications to the depth of the new hydro pump, more on this later...

That's all for now, I have a lot more body/floor pan work before I can mount the trans and get going on the turbos.....

SRT-440

There was a blue '69 Charger with black tinted windows that had twin turbos at Monster Mopar ...I'm assuming it was a 440 I can't really remember what the anouncer said. He launched kinda slow but you could hear the turbos spooling up sounded killer...he had tuning problems I believe cuz it wasn't a smooth run..I think he dipped into the 10's tho. I got a pic of it I'll try and upload..no pic of the engine, just him racing.

This will be a good read...lower compression of the motor home 440 might help ....it should live for a bit with a big intercooler 4-5lbs of boost and good tune. Turbos can be a headache, but they make power like mad!  :coolgleamA:

Keep us posted!  :popcrn: :2thumbs:

Nice!!

The blue charger srt is talking about has been posted on here, beautiful car. If no one posts it up ill take a look for the thread when I get home, he even had custom tail stripe callouts that read Tur/Bo insteat of R/T looked pretty cool. From what I remember he's got the car dialed in the mid 9s now.

Wilde Racing

I think I have a few pictures of the car you guys are talking about...

Sub-frame connectors welded in, but not finished. I'm going to do a little clean up grinding...

Floor tunnel almost done. Man, do I suck at panel replacement.

An last but not least, new parts..... A starter that is not the size of a small aircraft carrier, Type II Saginaw steering pump, pulley, and bracket. Lots of fab work is going to be required for the accessorys, and right now I'm searching for a smaller alternator. I'm doing all this to gain room for the turbos...

In the pic it looks like the jack stands are supporting the car from the frame...not a good idea when welding in frame connectors  :-\

You want the car to be supported as if it was on the ground because it sitting on the frame adds stress the car is not normally experiencing, this causes things to move a bit under the stress and than by welding in the frame connectors like that they are essentially fighting the car because it wants to go back to its normal shape.

Wilde Racing

I understand what you are saying, but I did a bit of jack stand placement tests. If I supported the car as it would be on it's own, the doors would not shut. if fact the passenger door would bounce off the striker. The car body sags a ton between the front and rear frame assys. When I set the stands as close as I could to each other the doors would come back a bit closer to being inline, and in my opinion had the amount of sag you would expect from a door this size and a car this old. but the sheer fact the car moves this much makes me wonder how many people adjust doors to compensate the actual lack of support between the frames.

All that being said I don't know if what I did was right or what the ill effects are going to be. I cant imagine by trying to get the car back closer to being "in-line" would be bad???? right????
