Another 68 Charger has left the US

Well it has been a while...but progress is slowly happening on the Charger.....

Started pulling engine out

Just before engine was taken out

Some of the bits to replace the worn bits

Took the seats and carpet out today to survey the rust damage inside...not too bad....here are some before and after shots

Before

After

While I am waiting for some more engine bits to arrive from the US, the engine block and heads are being machined. I will get some rust converter to prevent any further rust and make some patch panels for the floor to weld in. Unfortunatley, the driver's side will need a new panel (which is also on order at the moment). It has been a bit slow but a lot of fun.

Well, it has been a while since I posted updates, so here are some updated photos.....enjoy

What you don't see here is the weeks I spent cleaning the body deadener off the car...Geez what a dirty, stinky, horrible job!

I painted the floors in primer (before I cut the pans out) to see if I killed all the rust.

This is what the car looks like now

Engine bay getting emptier

Looking good, those are some solid floor pans! I've enjoyed following your progress in this thread. It's so cool that your Charger was optioned with cruise control! Very uncommon option. I didn't see the part on the inner fender for it but noticed that you have the special turn signal stalk still.  :2thumbs: :coolgleamA:

Oh and +1 for keeping the slots!! v

Darkman

Thanks.

When I first got it I noticed the turn signal stalk and couldn't figure out for the life of me what the button and dial was. When I decoded the fender tag, I was shocked that it was factory cruise control. Unfortunately, the sending unit in the engine bay was long gone before I got it so it will never be "factory original" cruise control again. I will put in an after market unit though, I love the thought of a 40+ year old car with cruise control.

The Slots will most likely stay as I think they set the car off nicely. I was debating on whether or not to put larger rims on, and may still have a set to swap out every now and then. The final decision on the rims will occur when I have the car painted and see how it looks. This is also when I will do the disc brake conversion. If the slots do not suit, then I will change the rims and fit the brakes accordingly

The big $$$ will be spent on the paint and interior (including all new custom wiring from nose to tail) everything else will be done by me.

Right on! I've seen the cruise control servo thingys pop up for sale from time to time, so I'm sure that if you wanted to put together a factory cruise setup you could, but as I'm sure you already know, it just depends on the $$$ you want to spend.

Darkman

A complete after new market unit will cost me less than an original one. Since the car will be converted to RHD, there will be no point getting the original setup. However, if it had still the original unit, then I would have made that work

Love the slots, however I think they look best on a rougher looking car like this. With a shiny new paint job - maybe not so much. If you were to paint it satin or matte finish then yes, they'll look great.

I think the easiest modification will be the wheels. Once painted, I will put the slots back on it, take a step back and have a look. I have my eye on Intro "twisted Vista" wheels. If I put them on, I will have to upgrade to rear discs also

I have pulled the dash and steering column out to continue the RHD conversion. The engine is still being machined so that will be a while away. Here are a few shots of the dash out and mocking up the new dash panel. I got a steering column from an Aussie valiant and fitted it in the LHD position to see what mods are needed. Luckily not too much. The Aussie steering column has the indicator on the right hand side with the wiper controls on the stalk so I won't have as many switches on the dash panel itself. I have a few new lights and billet aluminium push buttons (hazard lights, rear demister, and engine start).

And a couple of shots of my new apprentice (my 3yr old son)
