I'm not going to convert it back to LHD after the RHD conversion  :icon_smile_big:

So the plates will only hang on the garage wall.

Trust me, it's been done plenty of times before. Though most of those times were because the conversion was so dodgy hahaha.

Keep 'em. They'd be nothing more than a novelty to anyone else. But for you they're a part of your cars history. Great conversation piece.

If you absolutely don't care to keep them, I'll take 'em. Shoot me a PM and we can work something out.

Also, you now need one of these - or 2 if you're like me - I picked up a Mopar one and a Challenger one. They were my first purchase after I paid for my Chally  :2thumbs:

I'm 99% sure someone in California can buy those plate from you, and walk in to the dept of motor vehicles and register those plates to their Charger if the number is not already in use.  I had California guys ask to buy my Chargers plates once it brought it home to Minnesota.  I declined and have them hanging on the wall in my shop.   :yesnod:

Wow, that never use to be the case.

Just did a little goggling and found out the regulations have been changed.

What originally made black plates so special is only the cars that were issued them between 1963-1969 could have them, and could only stay with the car so long as it was always registered in California. Once it was registered out of state, they had to be handed back in, never to be used again.

This means that if you bought a car now that had black plates, it means it has been in California since 1969 - unless it was sold interstate, but never re-registered.

It was just a nice little time-line factor to help with the history of the car.

Unfortunately, this has now apparently been changed. It seems the Kindergarten Cop has changed some regulations - the DMV's "Year Of Manufacture" program - allowing vintage plates to be used on vintage cars, regardless of whether they originally were or not - thus the whole "black plate" history and uniqueness is now null & void. Nice one Arnie!

Sure did...I love the slots too...Was going to put 17/18" rims on but have decided to polish those bad boys up instead!

Now to find a set of disc brakes that will fit nicely in there!

I was thinking the same thing. They look great!

Are they 14" or 15" though? I'm pretty sure most of the semi-decent aftermarket disc-brake set-ups require at least a 15" wheel. Suppose there'd be 1001 threads on it in this section.

To be honest though - I think the whole thing looks great as is. haha - mangy mopars.

Is it driveable? Should just register it as is and fang around in it for a year whilst you get everything sorted for the build.

Darkman

They are 14's but apparently VN Commodore disc brake setup may fit but I will check and see. That is miles down the road, I will need to get the rust sorted out first.

It is driveable (well it has all the fluids in tip top shape, just can't get any action from the ignition) I believe it is an electrical gremlin that popped up during shipping. I have a couple of mechanics coming around on the weekend to try and fire her up. Won't get it registered as is as the rims are not stock..  :brickwall: but that won't stop me from driving it.  :D

It may well stay matt black just with shiny rims and trim, lower to the ground and dark tinted windows

One of the last Chargers I saw in the wild was a matte black '68, and it looked mean. I swear cars would deliberately change lanes to get out of its way. hahaha. Actually it may not have been matte black paint. Looked more like black primer. The thing looked angry!

Speaking of retarded SA vehicle regs, a bloke on another forum bought some new Rallye rims for his '68 Camaro. Exactly the same size, style, everything as originals - only difference is they were chrome Cragar repro's - and the car was knocked back for rego! - because they didn't originally come with chrome Rallyes. What the hell is wrong with people down there?

Darkman

Told ya it's not easy! If I want to drive it on the road, I need to convert it to avoid this crap

Looks awesome, congrats! Hopefully you can just fix the rust and keep it flat black with those rims! So fricken tough!!!!!

Our import laws arn't that bad - but registration laws for imports from State to State differ, and unfortunately for Darko, South Australia import rego laws are ridiculous.

If he wanted to keep it LHD, it has to be factory stock - and that's almost literal. Original paint colour only, no aftermarket wheels, not even an aftermarket stereo. Everything has to be factory spec.

If he wants it to be any different, he has to convert it to RHD - or move state!

Darkman, yes I remember that magazine pretty sure it was a old issue of Mopar Muscle I think...the guy who does the conversions has a clip on YouTube (doing a burnout?) one of his cars (I'm sure Aussie Members here may know of it) was a 73-74? Charger with a Daytona/Superbird type wing on the back the car was black I'll see what I can find.
