I have a 318 and 904 setup with a '79 date code for sale on craigslist and I had an interested buyer email me and said that he needed an early 318... which I also have (1968)... and a non-lockup 904 trans.  I'm not too familiar with what years were what when it comes to transmissions.  Can anyone help me?  What years were the non-lockup 904s produced?  Thanks!!

'78 was the first year for the lockup converter.

If the engine/trans are mated and you don't want to separate them, the transmission part number is stamped in the pan rail on the drivers side, that number will tell you if it's lockup or not.

If the trans is separate look at the input shaft, on the non-lockup the splines extend all the way to the front of the shaft, the lockup will have a smooth pilot shaft in front of the splines.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.
