i just swapped out my 360 for a 383. the 383 was bought from a guy who had it in his car but took it out for a 440 swap. he said it ran fine and had plenty of power but did have a pretty big cam in it.
i checked with the intake off and it looks like a purple shaft cam, but i have no idea what size.

oil pressure is good, temp is good. its got open headers right now until i get it to where im able to drive it to the exhaust shop. that does make it a little hard to hear any strange noises.

the engine had only been out of the car a couple weeks.

since i installed it i cant get the car to move much without really reving the engine. the car drives like a moped going up hill. ive tried two transmissions and two different converters one a 1800 stall and one 2800-3000 stall both did the same thing.

initial timing is set at 18-20 degrees and it will idle on its own. it revs good while in park and starts right up every time. but just seems to have no power on the road. its all i can do to get it to go 30mph. it literally feels like im in 3rd gear when im in 1st. i just have no idea what is wrong.

please give me some ideas or suggestions on what it may be.

thanks

I'll take a swing here.

Do you have big block kick down linkage hooked up and adjusted properly?

thanks for the replies guys, i took a shot in the dark and swapped my old edelbrock onto the motor. that did the trick. im not sure exactly what was causing the problem with the holley but it runs like a champ now. no issues.  :2thumbs:

now i just got to get my exhaust hooked up and im good to go.

Edelbrocks and Holleys don't use the same throttle adapter.  Did you change that when you put the Holley on?  (Holley throttle stud part #20-36 and extension part #20-7)  Also, as suggested, unless the kick down linkage was set up correctly, the car may have been short-shifting and that can damage your transmission.

It would be a shame if an Edelbrock went back on when there is a serviceable Holley available.  ;)

as far as the throttle adaptor, i just rigged it up temporary but made sure i had full travel. i dont need kickdown linkage because i have a full manual valve body.

that being said, what in the carb could cause that problem? i know nothing about how a carb operates or how to modify things internally  :shruggy:

thanks

In that case, I wouldn't know what would cause that problem if the car was running fine otherwise.  :shruggy:

Was the throttle linkage adjusted to get the carb fully open?
