Just ran across these pics on a NASCAR modelling forum. I hadn't seen them before, and wondered whether you guys had either.

So Petty Enterprises have restored Pete Hamilton's #40 Superbird?

How did I miss this?  :slap:

CornDogsCharger

In this picture here it appears like a '71-'74 Plymouth Satellite/Road Runner sitting in the background.  This car looks to be the standard production model.  It still has it's inner fender aprons, glass, trim, etc.  Random question, but would Petty Enterprises ever use regular production cars as parts cars?

The above is a modern photo taken after the 65 Barracuda was unearthed, but probably NOT taken at Petty Enterprises.    It is said that the early Chrysler stuff in '64 was built from street cars, but by 1966 once the program really got rolling, there was no reason to use street cars or parts for anything.

nitrometal

There's a couple that I haven't seen before.  Thanks!!!
I love the smell of nitro in the morning.

'n why would this early Plymouth in Petty colors have a "GTX" on it?..
anyone familiar with the orgins of that "GTX" name or know why it's on what I believe is a '65 B-bod?...  :shruggy:

They ran the '65 at the 1966 Firecracker 400, I have heard,  for aerodynamic reasons.   To quote Chrysler aero engineer John Pointer about the '66 Plymouth,  he once said: "The '66 Plymouth was a brick... and it didn't want to go very fast".   As to the GTX on the quarter panels, it was to promote the current car.   I guess they figured nobody would notice!

Here is the demise of that car that led to it's place in the Petty junkyard.

I thought the '66/7 model won a lot of races,.. i do remember the vynal top car and the magazine articles that ran at the time... that was when the charger needed a spoiler to keep the back down on the track, I'l go research the race record of the '64/5 Vs the '66/7 bodystyles,.. so I guess it's safe to say that's the remains of that particular stock car which is probably now under Level Cross somewhere...  :shruggy:

Yes, the '66-67 car was engineered (cheated up) into a very successful race car, including a Daytona 500 win, the 27 win 1967 season, etc.    I'm sure it stands right up there in the win catagory against the '72-'74 Chargers.
