Found two 518s at pick and pull . Brought the 3 wire 1995 model home. There was a 1998 with the 8 wire plug. Are the cases the same on the later one?  Can you swap a 3 wire valve body into the new one?

No, the '96 and later have no provisions for the mechanical governor that the 3-wire VB would need.
